Hi
Just wondering if anyone can kindly help with some advise on selling vintage couture garments.
If a button or 2 is missing, is it better to sell the garment in original condition, or is it more appropriate to put on a set of new buttons?
My sister has given me a small collection of couture garments that belonged to her mother-in law, most came from either le Louvre or Georges of Collins St, circa 1950s and 1960s, mostly dress suits and day dresses. They have all been drycleaned, but two pieces have buttons missing or damaged. An evening dress has the chiffon hem partly down, and I plan to get this invisible mended before selling, as its impossible to see the hemming stitches.
Thanks for any tips or help!

Sounds like you have some lovely vintage outfits. 🙂 In my opinion and I don't know much, or sell Vintage Clothes, I would leave them AS IS. Unless you know exactly what is needed, you may ruin the Outfits, because they have been altered. Albeit only marginally.
I do know, that collectors, prefer the items in Original Condition and then they can alter them to their needs if they wish.
Please, this is my opinion only. You may get a Collector of these items that may shed some more light. 🙂

Why not offer the best of both worlds, say that there are a couple of buttons missing and you have been unable to find exact replacements but yu are including a ful set of buttons the correct size and style if the buyer wishes to use them.

hi horizon - you have nice things too!
Thanks for replying, I'm thinking the same way as what you've written, that its best to leave as is. But I guess it will make them harder to sell. I'm out of my depth with these - these days, I mostly live in jeans and loose woolly jumpers.
