you mean a bowl with a lid with a hole in it ? after brushing, the hair is pulled from the brush and put inside.

Once upon a time ladies used to save their hair to make a false pad, called a rat, or ratt, to pad out their hairstyles. (Think Edwardian bouffy look). When you did the 100 strokes with the hairbrush every night it was fairly inevitable that some would fall out, too.
