10.5% or 19%?

has anyone thought to ask the farmers who hire backpackers weather they prefer 10.5% or 19% after being informed of the repurcussions of one over the other?

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-11-24/backpacker-tax-jacqui-lambie-exchange-with-nff/8055250

looks to me like someone with no farming experience is more interested in the farmers than the NFF.

NFF just going with the lib/nats as usual.

i often wonder just what the farming comunity gets for it blind support of the national party.

i'm hearing lots of complaints about the outback NBN coverage, you would think being half the govt the nationals would want the best possible NBN for it bush supporters not this unreliable EXPENSIVE carp they are getting.

Re: 10.5% or 19%?

maybe the simple way to sort out the who is and who isnt an aussie for tax purposes would be that the person employing someone and therefore paying them is responsible for lodging the paperwork regarding this.

create a taxation form with , name (real not made up), country of origin (backpackers have passports aussies have birth certificates).

add that making false claims will result in 20 year prison terms.

if a person cant prove where they come from ect they dont get the job.

the farmer/employer doesnt want to go to jail so it makes sense to stick to people that have the proof required.

The ordinary Australian taxpayer who does not get the taxfree threshhold is paying $95 tax on a gross income of $400 so anything below 24% for seasonal workers is good value.

i watched 'the drum' on abc tonight, seems backpackers just 'tick the box' saying they are residents of australia thus recieving the $18.000 tax free threshold. seems no one ever bothers to check up on this loophole. one of the panel members thought maybe something ought to be done about that so any new tax might actually work.

i tend to agree.

It appears no-one checks any part of the tax free threshold system. Our son who is studying at TAFE, works part time at a brand name fast food joint. He has taken a second job at a local take away shop. The boss was going to charge 49 cents in the dollar tax as the son had already claimed the tax free threshold at the first job.

We contacted our accountant who advised us to claim the tax free threshold from both businesses as no-one ever checks. !!!!!

The wife contacted the ATO and got it sorted in the end, but it was all a lot harder than it should have been.

exactly

i was gobsmacked when i learned about the lack of checks and balances in this area.

we are getting all this hullabaloo about a tax of 10.5% or 13% or 15% or 19% or 32% but nothings being said about this giant black hole in the system.

heads should roll IMOP

Turnbull 'unhinged', says Fitzgibbon

A Labor frontbencher has described the Prime Minister as "unhinged" over the federal government's stance on the backpacker tax.

Malcolm Turnbull accused Labor of pandering to "rich white" backpackers from Europe, by wanting to set the tax lower than what is offered to Pacific Island seasonal workers.

It follows ongoing negotiations between the crossbench and the Federal Government.

Shadow Minister Joel Fitzgibbon says Mr Turnbull has insulted workers relied on by farmers.

if i was a "rich white backpacker from europe" dont rekon i'd be picking fruit for anyone, too busy getting blotto in city nightclubs

Looks like it's been resolved:

Farmers across the country have expressed relief that the long-running backpacker tax debate has been resolved.

But they remain angry it took so long for federal politicians to agree on a final outcome.

From January, backpackers will be taxed at 15 per cent, with the Government recouping 65 per cent of the workers' superannuation when the backpackers leave the country.

Re: 10.5% or 19%?

all i have to say about this 'deal' is

the greens should learn from history what can happen to little partys who do deals with big partys

remember meg lees and the democrats?

not saying this deal is in the same league as the GST but i fully expect anything promised will prolly not ever get delivered.

if the people wind up getting screwed it'll be the greens that will get the blame.
