60 minutes wet markets story

Don't ever watch TV but was at a friends house and saw the 60 minutes story from the wet markets in Thailand.

Imagine how much worse they are in China- so many rare endangered animals.

Nature has rebelled-it's because of the sick eating and wet market habits of the Chinese that the world is now suffering, not to mention xi lying to his own people - china needs a rebellion because the sick communist system has failed and is failing the rest of the world.

And yet stupid people in other countries keep up these sick habits with all that's going on (ie thailand).

I wanna punch scum like dastyari in the mouth.

Trump has been lying to his own people too, at one stage calling covid-19 a 'hoax'. Latest figures put the number infected in the U.S at over 600 with 23 deaths. That's about 150 new cases since Sunday.

I think if you convert Trump speak to " normal " English, his claim has some merit. 23 deaths from a population of 331,002, 651 people is so statistically minuscule that it is not even worth doing the math. In any given year the U.S. expects to have 12,000 people die from regular flu, so the current deaths from Coronavirus in the U.S are even nothing more than a statistical blip in " normal " flu statistics.

If you extrapolate the damage that is being caused to global economies ( and think of the U.S. in this example ) it is completely disproportionate to the existing problem. We have seen this in Australia with the mass toilet paper hysteria. A completely irrational , crazy reaction to the disease.

In the past, media sources recognised they had a responsibility to provide factual, accurate information without the hype. Now social media and trashy, hyped up traditional media sources such the morning shows, " the Project " and even the ABC are contributing to mass panic.

What I am finding particularly interesting is the (inevitable, these days) start of the conspiracy theories.

The main one is that this is a partly manufactured virus released by China, from its viral research laboritories close by.

The other theory (apparently popular in China) is that it is the result of US germ warfare.

From what I have read, there is nothing to support either of those theories, but it is interesting how people look for someone or something to blame.

I think any pandemic was always going to start naturally in China or one of the Asian countries, because of the mix of people and animals.

From what i can gather though, although it is infectious, it isn't necessarily a serious illness for everyone. In some people, the symptoms are only mild.

Yes, 600 isn't a lot. Let's see what the number is in a fortnight.
Predictions are the ASX is going to take another battering today. In overseas news, Italy has now gone into total lockdown.

I would not trust the American figures.  The first 100 000 testing kits they used were faulty so proper testing only started less than 2 weeks ago and the number of kits available is limited, as are numbers of effective masks in hospitals,    Poor people without insurance cannot afford to get tested, I believe the test is $3 200 a pop.  The poor cannot afford to miss a shift,  or they will not be able to pay their rent and will be chucked on the street.  Pandemic sweeping through America will be ugly.  People who think the situation in China was ugly better brace themselves.

New info about the origin: A 55-year-old individual from Hubei province in China may have been the first person to have contracted COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus spreading across the globe. That case dates back to Nov. 17, 2019, and had nothing to do with the market.  Actually, I have been wondering why it was NONE of the workers at the market to be infected.

I agree. I think it's a red herring.
