It must be a joke, surely???

VETERAN Channel Seven journalist Mike Willesee has hit out at the Australian Federal Police raid on the network’s headquarters this morning, saying it would not reveal anything because Schapelle Corby has not been paid.

There were “heated scenes” at Channel Seven’s Sydney headquarters today as its offices were raided by the AFP.

It is understood Federal police were looking for evidence of the lucrative media deal the Corby family reportedly signed on behalf of Schapelle for her first post-prison interview with Seven’s current affairs flagship program, Sunday Night.

They have to apply for a warrant, the court doesn't order it, as far as I know.

Mr McWilliam says the network has yet to make any payments to Corby or her family.

He says the raid is surprising because the network had given all their documents to the AFP after an order was served to the network last week.

Mr McWilliam says the raid will not stop the network from pursuing an interview.

"This is a story of great public interest. I think people probably do want to hear what she's got to say and we would like the interview to go ahead," he said.

"The fact is, as I understand it, no deal has been reached to get the story."

The AFP has confirmed it has executed a number of search warrants in Sydney relating to the Proceeds of Crime Act.

"This includes provisions for literary proceeds, where a person profits from their criminal notoriety," the AFP said in a statement.

"Literary proceeds action does not prevent a person from telling his or her story to the media. The provisions do not interfere with freedom of speech.

"The purpose of the provision is to prevent a person deriving a financial benefit from criminal activity."

I think Mr McWilliam is an outride idiot. "Mr McWilliam says the raid will not stop the network from pursuing an interview."

If she does an interview her parole could be revoked, and the Australian government could take the money as proceeds of crime. She either admits she did it, or denies she did, screwed either way.

But it's all about the potential ratings.

Police statement re Ch7 raids

........All AFP search warrants are authorised by a magistrate or an appropriate member of the judiciary following sufficient supporting documentation or material being presented.

I can't see the point in Schapelle doing an interview while she is still on parole in Indonesia.

What can she say that hasn't already been said. She would not be wise to complain about the conditions of the prision or prison staff.

If she reinforces she is innocent... that could be seen as lying by Indonesian authorities.. which she is not allowed to do.

What else has she been doing in the last 10 years?

Why doesn't she wait till 2017 (not that far away) ... and speak freely then... perhaps because media/people interest in her would have waned significantly by then?

Why would she risk going back to jail?

She has already angered the Indonesian justice department, by staying in a luxury villa instead of her family's compound, by wanting to give an interview, and by covering her face with a tea towel, which is considered disrespectful.  She will have to walk on eggshells for three years, because many in that department disagreed with her parole and it won't take much to have it revoked.

Just seeing the media grovelling - financially if nothing else - to get the first interview with this convicted drug trafficker saddens (but not surprises) me.

The elder statesman (big chuckle) of journalism, Willesee, **bleep**ising whatever principles he may have had by hanging around in Bali just waiting for an opportunity to get an interview with a bogan.   How sad.

And to what end ?   Just so that Corby can protest her innocence yet again and re-tell her woe-is-me-I-was-set-up-it-was-a-tough-time-in-jail story ?   Yep, and sell more advertising time during the interview, more column-inches, whatever.

What a circus.

I doubt very much whether Schapelle Corby has orchestrated any of this 'circus' herself. Whether or not she is guilty she is as much a victim as anyone else in this media feeding frenzy and I only hope she finally emerges from it all with her sanity intact.

On another note: was anyone else as alarmed as I was to see that plain clothes FP officer swaggering around with a gun sticking out of his his pocket. Could anyone seriously believe that he and the other officers conducting that search were in physical danger from Channel Seven staff?

They love to show off their power and intimidation tactics, and not sure where he got his stop filming script from, its not an offence to film police and many advocates activly recomend it, after all if they are not planning on breaking the law what is the problem, it actually protects both parties

yes they are, but the weapons are holstered, not stuffed in a belt with the butt hanging out in full view.

Schapelle will reside in Europe where she can live because of her grandparent's ties with the continent.  Six weeks ago, I officially got my papers and passport that declare me a citizen of a European country despite both my parents being born in Australia and only one of my grandparents being born in Europe. I now have dual citizenship and can live and work without restriction anywhere in Europe.

No doubt she will travel back and forth to Australia often, but she really doesn't have a life here anymore. She has become notorious like Lindy Chamberlain, will find it difficult to find employment. Most of her friends from a decade ago have moved on with their own lives. Her only close relatives, her brothers and her mother would likely travel to Europe often to see her, as they have to Bali. It could be worse than being a cashed up bogan in Europe... They're everywhere there, Schapelle won't stand out.

Even if she didn't have this tie with Europe, she could still live in most countries if she purchases a property, shows she has substantial savings and applies to the embassy of the said country which will review her conviction and make a decision. A friend of mine had a criminal conviction for drugs and spent time in the slammer and she was able to live in Russia for a year after disclosing her convictions to the embassy and receiving a particular visa.

Russia is ALOT more restrictive than Europe and considering the ambiguous nature of Schapelle's arrest, where many consider her innocent, I think she would have no problems.

Even in the US, they will grant foreigners entry to their country with a serious conviction (drugs, assault etc) if it has been more than five years since the conviction and you attend an interview at the US embassy and show evidence of how you have changed and won't be a threat to America and its country.
