OK I'm watching an auction for an Army Kevlar helmet....it's a US one though as I couldn't find an Aussie one!:^O

I just bought some brand new ex-army water bottles for C, from an aussie ebay seller (although they're from the US army) ๐Ÿ™‚

Doll, I am so sorry J was suspended... so often our kids will have an outburst and then get punished. What needs to happen is a bit of investigation as to why he had the outburst and then work to solve that problem.

To them their meltdowns are a reaction to the environment.

Retro, so pleased that there have been no suspension for a while for your son. I hope that continues. And you are right that it does get better and they are capable of realisation and change. They don't need to understand it they just need to be able to recognise the situation and learn to act accordingly.

From what I learnt from that seminar is that anger and outbursts often stems from anxiety... dealing with anxiety is what I am trying to work on but am a bit lost about how to approach it. I am coming up with refusal and anger every time I try to discuss it so I have to figure out how to do it via stealth...

Just a thought... my son loved a game called Laser Skirmish.

We did it out in the bush and it was a great sport for him.

We had to stop as he ending up tearing a tendon in his knee at school. I would love to start it up again but can't afford it at the moment.

It is a great game for aspie kids.. even though they work in a team they go off and do their own thing... and most aspie boys I know love "shoot em up" games on computers and xbox..

I think a meet would be fun for us grownups :-D, but might be a bit much for the kiddies, I know J would find it rather difficult.
He has had many, many meltdowns at school, this is only his second suspension. this time he has been suspended not for throwing tables around the room, but because he pushed one of them into the stomach of another child and injured her. The cause was that the other child cheated on a board game they were playing, she rolled a low number, but moved 6 spaces, so J lost it and pushed the table into her. Other kids cheating on games always sets him off. My mum has suggested that we try giving him incident reports to fill out when there is an issue like this so there is a procedure in place for him to follow other than just telling the teacher who may be busy at the time. I don't know if it will work or not..
I have always wanted to try skirmish catmad ๐Ÿ˜„

And yes.. I too congratulate you on your DS return to education... :-x

My son had a hard time transitioning into high school and I hope that when he gets older he too will be able to do what your son has done.

Thanks everyone, he is definitely of an academic bent, he has moved from 5s and 6s in 1st year uni to 6s and 7s now. I think he will the classic case of ending up working in what Attwood calls the sheltered workshops for people with ASD - research at a university ๐Ÿ™‚

He has never left education catmad, he went straight from high school to uni, he turned 18 at the end of May. He was diagnosed 11 years ago at age 7 (by Tony Attwood among others who saw him at the time)

My son enjoys Laser Force which is played indoors but much the same thing I think. catmad, Dungeons and Dragons (played with the dice and a group of people and not the computer game) and Warhammer are very popular games with ASD kids, your son might be interested in finding groups that play these?

They aren't exactly shoot 'em up games but are strategy/role playing games that appeal to the systemising type of processing people with ASD usually have. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empathizing%E2%80%93systemizing_theory

yes... apsie kids hate it when others cheat... they are so good a following rules but can't handle it when others don't.

I loved laser skirmish Doll.. no bruises as there are no projectiles. I loved to play but the last time I played was two years ago and I had just gotten over a very bad virus... usually after a game I am a bit sore the next day but this time I could not walk and after five days I went to the doctor and they diagnosed arthritis. I will probably never be able to play again without great fatigue and pain to follow. I have been too scared to play since.

Islandretro, yes I like Tony's comments about sheltered workshops, he has a good sense of humour and makes a lot of sense. What does your son study?

Island, yes, my son love Warhammer but it is out of my budget. We had a miniature games place here that both my boys like to attend and when I get a job again they can start up again. He has spent a lot of time painting his models... even I enjoyed helping out in that area.

He does not like board games, well he did like the games but had major meltdown if he lost.. really bad. Before he was diagnosed I had tried to play them with him but in the end I gave up because he spent more time arguing and trying to alter the rules to what he wanted. It was no fun at all.

I didn't think of Dungeons and Dragons but I might look into that as I am sure they play it here in town at the miniature games place.. thanks for that

Did or does your boy like those cards like yugio (sp), magic cards and others. Gosh.. we have hundreds of those darn cards. I am not allow to get rid of them even though he never looks at them anymore. He spent hours organising them...
