Thank you all.....:) I read that forum...and am more confused :^O if that's possible.

Miss 5 is doing beautifully at school, her teacher is fantastic and has made a huge effort, far beyond expectations, to help her settle in and be part of her class. Almost like it was meant to be that school......

I have a friend with a 5 yo who is just beginning the diagnostic route for an ASD. One psychologist told the mum a year ago that her child does not have Aspergers, after spending 5 mins with her. She asked what it might be, he said anxiety.........She accepted that and changed her parenting techniques.

A year later, little miss is in school and her problems have multiplied. Mum is at her wits end and feels a failure, despite having an 11 yo well adjusted daughter who has never been prone to "difficult" behaviour.

Yesterday the mum saw another psychologist who was about as useful as the other mums at school....:|

I have said she should go back to her GP and ask/demand some help or some direction....she is not confident of a good response.

The other issue is another child, aged 4. He has an ADHD diagnosis and medication....but it doesn't seem to "fit" (and not just to me) his paed does not see the need for any other investigation. (also no therapies or help offered) That to me says "here are your drugs, now move on"

Azureline,

I took C to many people over the years and asked about ASD in passing.

The first proffessional I talked to was a paediatrician who specialised in toileting issues (he took 4 1/2 years to toilet train) - she took one look at him (for about 10 sec) and said "Nope, he's not on the spectrum."

When he was being assessed for Asperger's the next year, the school psych did a cognitive assessment and said he couldn't possibly be on the spectrum because he had looked her in the eye a couple of times. (that is extremely rare!)

2 months later he was diagnosed.

Tel the Mum not to give up until she gets some serious answers from people who look at the situation properly. Not those who take a glance and say couldn't be.

Anyone who is dealing with autism should always remember this:

"If you've met one child with autism, you've met one child with autism".:-)

Just bumping this in case someone needs it.

The other child now has a diagnosis of PDDNOS/ADHD, waiting for an apt with Autism Qld and the "friend" is waiting for an appointment with a paed but the strategies I shared are working for them.

My GD is doing well at school, the teacher is wonderful! No teacher aide in her composite class of prep/year 1 but she handles her beautifully. Some things are meant to be and sometimes special people appear when you need them?

I am so thankful for all the people in here who shared so much, here and privately! :-x

Hi Azure,

I'm really glad to hear that the other child received a diagnosis, must be a relief for the parent.  Whilst none of us like to label our kids, I found that by discovering the diagnosis it was empowering in that at least we had something to work with and process.

Talking about disability just spent about an hour on the phone to centrelink seeing if we are eligible for the family tax benefit after 16. Because DD does not meet the criteria (ie can't complete year 12 due to the disability) we need to seek an exemption.

Can't complain though, really we have been well looked after along  this journey of living with disability, DD13 is doing well this year and shock horror completing work in advance!!! New psychologist is brilliant, DD likes her because she does not treat her differently!!  DD17 and 15 are doing well at school, best of all we are surviving it all LOL.

That is lovely Bella, that your girls are doing well, makes it a bit more relaxing for you and your OH :-x

The Dev. Paed was concerned that the  child was getting a label....the mum said he already has one and it isn't a good one.

However, seeing the success of early intervention and therapy with my GD, I have to say, I am 100% in favour of early diagnosis and treatment.

Children with committed parents are very blessed. โ™ฅ

Absolutley I am with you Azure early intevention makes a massive difference to long term outcomes with children with a disability.

Yes I've been relaxing far too much, I completed a years worth of study in three weeks (reduced study load) cleaned  the house inside and out and now well I'm considering some more extras to keep me on my toes!!!

Can't beleive how quiet is is around here with OH at uni as well. I'm feeling really blessed the girls are doing so well!

I'm glad to hear GD is enjoying school and coping with all the changes.  You must be soooo proud :-x  don't know if I have mentioned it but you are inspiring Azure, to be so lovingly involved in your GD's life and so supportive. ๐Ÿ™‚
