Abstract Art - why talk about it if you don't get it.

I volunteer at a regional gallery and get to meet some wonderful, weird and wacky people.

But the ones that get up my goat are the ones who say "That looks like something a 5 year old would do." and expect me to agree with them.

And whilst we have a lot of community exhibitions that are amateurish enough (so perhaps the comment may be fair enough), the comment is usually reserved for iconic artists in major travelling exhibitions who are extremely well known.

Does anyone here like abstract art? And if you really hate it, why?

Re: Abstract Art - why talk about it if you don't get it.

a young guy who used to live around the corner from us - in St Marys NSW - won the Archibald prize one year and then had it taken away because his painting was from a photo and not from a sitting - probably best part of 45 years ago now. He painted a mural of our band members on my bedroom walls - probably worth a fortune now if they (the people who bought the house) hadn't scraped it off.

Martini, I can see now how there are some people that you'd never want to guide through an art gallery.

Oh my god yes lol! I thought I'd come back from lunch to a few comments and I got this...

No offense all but please stay away from me on a Saturday morning lol. Or at least keep your opinions to yourselves. Because saying out loud "this could be done by a 5 year old" whilst standing in front of a Fred Williams or Brett Whitely makes you look like a fool.

Sorry to be so blunt but there it is.

edit: Another example of the value of higher education - probably did 6 years at uni to think of that.

Thats pretty funny rabbit- 'almost' remembering a Duchamp..

Pity. I see your mockery..

You mean to tell me that would require an artistic temperament and training??

Sorry I haven't read all the comment but saw this picture and thought this was a good example of what happens when you don't know what you are talking about.

This is not a piece of art that is simply a wheel on a stool. It would take 2 seconds to google Duchamp and realise the intent of this piece (and others like it)  and what he was saying about art and how a piece like that fits in to his (personal) debate about objects vs art.

I don't particularly like his pieces. Nor would I want one in my house. But to say "anyone could do it" without an attempt to understand, is laughable.

you got that right - but, how much did the gallery pay for it?

Re: Abstract Art - why talk about it if you don't get it.

Millions spent on carp, just because of the ramblings of an art critic/advisor.

How did they get to be an art critic/advisor? Know more about art than general public that is for sure.

Rabbit-im thinking art is like books.

Some folk read non fiction--------------others read novels.

I prefer the non fiction..................................Richo.

That's cool. I like it. Things to think about looking at that.

REB, the artistry is in convincing of someone that a load of codswallop has actually got worth, and there are a lot who will swallow anything that is fed to them so as not to admit that they don't have a clue of what the 'Artist" is on about. The "Artist" meanwhile laughs all the way to fame and fortune at the expense of the gullible believers 🙂

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

OK here we go, AM what do you like about it ans what enlightening things does it make you think about?

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.
