Abstract Art - why talk about it if you don't get it.

I volunteer at a regional gallery and get to meet some wonderful, weird and wacky people.

But the ones that get up my goat are the ones who say "That looks like something a 5 year old would do." and expect me to agree with them.

And whilst we have a lot of community exhibitions that are amateurish enough (so perhaps the comment may be fair enough), the comment is usually reserved for iconic artists in major travelling exhibitions who are extremely well known.

Does anyone here like abstract art? And if you really hate it, why?

I won't comment, but it makes me think.

Now, that's what I call art. Look at that depth, the way the colours meet and blend in perfect harmony. It's obvious what the artist is trying to covey.

Is that a critique?

You have an economy of words to say the least:)

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Erica--that Duchamp painting -looks like a kids birthday icecream cake that

has started melting--plus someone has rested a red cupcake at the rear.

Re: Abstract Art - why talk about it if you don't get it.

The way people perceive art is subjective, the same as it is with music, fashion, literature etc. There's nothing wrong with wanting to know more about a work of art and I'm often driven to find out who is behind an image or sculpture I like or even sometimes something I don't like. If an artwork has engaged me on some level I want to know more about it, sure I can appreciate it for what it is and I can even take away my own 'story' that I get from it, but it's nothing compared to getting a glimpse about where that particular piece sprang from.

I enjoy and appreciate the experimentation behind art, pushing of boundaries, the social commentary it can reveal, the glimpse of a time and a place that can never be replicated because it's already gone. Arts funding is important and can actually benefit the homeless and disconnected in our society, in fact art is often a way to engage these people and link them to services they need and introduce them to skills they didn't know they have.

I'm also intrigued but the constant dig at 'art critics' do you feel the same way about those that critique and review literature/music/sport/food? You don't have to agree but it can show you a different perspective.

Poddy, my guess is your image is another of your daughters? Not sure how precious you are about your privacy, but an awful lot can be found out from that image so you may want to delete if privacy is an issue for you and/or your family?
