I volunteer at a regional gallery and get to meet some wonderful, weird and wacky people.
But the ones that get up my goat are the ones who say "That looks like something a 5 year old would do." and expect me to agree with them.
And whilst we have a lot of community exhibitions that are amateurish enough (so perhaps the comment may be fair enough), the comment is usually reserved for iconic artists in major travelling exhibitions who are extremely well known.
Does anyone here like abstract art? And if you really hate it, why?

You might be ashamed, but you would "magnet" it to the fridge and say "that's beautiful, darling".

Says you. Others would disagree.
The painting IS beautiful to me and many others I would imagine. The colour, form and composition appeal to me as much as a the technical ability of a Von Geurard appeals to me.
Your post makes me glad I have an open mind and am the type of person that can see beauty in most things.

Not that I particularly like Von Gereurd BTW.
With the exception of his Ferntree Gully painting, I personally find his paintings dull and boring with no focal points. But I still appreciate his technical ability, the fact that he captured the bush well, and his place in art history.

here is an oil painting from my favorite artist
This is not the final product but is close to it
it is a self portrait of my daughter although you can't really see her face and she is more beautiful in reality

Seriously?
You'd be ashamed of your own 5 year old over an artwork?

you keep making contradictory statements.
you say you are glad you have an open mind
and see beauty in most things but earlier you said
there was quite a bit of abstract art that you detest.
you said if people want to see easy to understand
art - they should visit ikea then you said you liked
looking at old paintings in the gallery because they
depict pretty dresses.
you acknowledge others have different tastes but
when someone describes a painting technique as
childish - you say it makes them look like a fool.
so who was the artist? was the criticism directed
at their work in general? or particular piece?
i would like to know what the op is referring to.

of course I would. I guess 'ashamed' is the wrong word but if I did a painting like that I would be ashamed to show it to anyone.

I have just talked for 30mins about the qualities of the painting?
Frankly, I too would like to see the painting that a volunteer would talk about for 30 minutes.
(Actually, I applaud the person who must have been trying so hard to find the meaning of the picture, and showed great patience with a 30 minute lecture, before coming to the conclusion "that a 5 year old could have done that")

So here we go again .....another elitist remark. Just because one dares to express a different opinion to your.
I mean... how dare they. .

So what is it about the painting that caused you to select it from the internet and pretend to like it (for some el bizarro reason)? And why would anyone even pretend to like something they don't? It seems a bit pre-schoolish to me.
What is it that you don't like about it?
