if you close the windows the air has no where to go, like trying to blow in a sealed bottle, you cant.

I dragged out my old personal swampy last night to help. Had it blowing straight on me all night. Lovely.
Got it from Aldi a few year's back...cost me $69.
I've even seen desktop ones for about $70
I've had to close my back door - usually left open (security door closed)
Hot northerly winds blowing in make it hard for the cooler to cope.

My understanding is that evaporative coolers arent much good in humid areas ...... They seem to be more suited to drier areas ..... Personally I dont think they would cool the room down enough for me, I like the temp to be around 22 degrees in the really hot weather. I wouldnt be without mine plus I can use in during the cold weather as well. The Vic government is introducing a great solar power scheme in July, which will make running a SS much cheaper and far less hassle

if i was richer id prolly want a couple of split systems as i too like it cooler. but i just cant aford the elrctricity bill to run even 1. as it is i now go pretty much all winter without heating as my split system is my only heater. the winter electricity bills get up to $400 a 1/4 just running it on the really cold days.
south australia has the most expensive electricity in the country at the moment.

I live in Sydney near the airport and on the shores of BotanyBay.
I had an evaporative cooler many years ago and it was absolutely useless for most of the summer as it was too humid. It only made a real difference on 5 or 6 days of the summer when the humidity was low.

I hear what you are saying David, my Winter elect bill was over $600 plus another $500 for wood, even with 2 of us living here, that a LOT of $$$, which is why I am going to take up the Vic govs solar offfer

My daughter had one on her house in Umina, it was there when she bought the house. She found it totally useless cause of the high humidity which is much the same as Sydney.
