And another toddler mauled to death by a dog?

2 years old and killed by a mastiff cross.

The grandmother managed to free the boy from the dogs jaws and rushed him inside. The dog followed her in and grabbed the baby right out of her arms because he wasn't finished.

By all accounts a well cared for dog with no history so we can't blame the owners here.

Why do we continue to allow these dogs to be kept in homes??

Re: And another toddler mauled to death by a dog?

In Queensland (it may be the same in other states, I don't know) all pups have to be microchipped by the breeder before they are sent to their new homes. Of course there may be some (from twinkle's back-yard breeders) who go un-chipped.

As far as desexing, some breeders will insist that if a pup is not sold for show or as a brood bitch (full papers provided) - that it be desexed (limited papers provided or none). I don't really see how they can enforce that but some charge show price and refund the difference (usually a significant amount) after proof of desexing.

I also meant to add that, Council Registration is usually lower for a desexed dog / bitch.

eg Pensioner rate is $2 if the dog / bitch is desexed but $99 if the are not desexed - the dogs not the pensioners.

Isn't a back yard breeder just your average every day breeder that didn't get registered?

and those who get pups before they get around to desexing.  Lazy? I'd rather desex dogs rather than get lumbered with pups.

And a licence test to own a pet 🙂 That would put a few off buying the cute puppy that gets neglected when it grows up.

Council registrations vary. In ours, a desexed dog is $31, for pensioners it is $26.

That says from the age of 3 months not by 3 months......

I know my vet dislikes desexing any dog under 6 months.

Anything that is over 3 months has to be desexed before Frankston council accepts registration.  Anything that is 3 months has to be registered, and that applies across Victoria.  In Frankston shire (and some others) if your dog is over 3 months and not registered you can be fined several hundreds of dollars.  If you do it by the book, you have your puppy desexed before they reach 3 months because on the date they turn 3 months they are required to be registered, and if they are not desexed they will not be registered. Cat Frustrated
