And another toddler mauled to death by a dog?

2 years old and killed by a mastiff cross.

The grandmother managed to free the boy from the dogs jaws and rushed him inside. The dog followed her in and grabbed the baby right out of her arms because he wasn't finished.

By all accounts a well cared for dog with no history so we can't blame the owners here.

Why do we continue to allow these dogs to be kept in homes??

I personally would not have a dog desexed under 6 months....too risky. Yarra Ranges does not require desexing of dogs but cats must be.

Isn't a back yard breeder just your average every day breeder that didn't get registered?

Registered breeder has to register all his litters and every pup in the litter, not doing that is against the ANKC rules.  And yes, registered breeders do microchip all their pups, it is mandatory in Victoria now, the Dogs Victoria will not accept application for registering pups unless it has their microchip numbers.   And even BYB flogging crossbreed now have to microchip, or they are not allowed to advertise them.

I am pretty sure it is like that now also in other states; I personally have microchipped all my pups before I sold them for more than a decade.  When I microchip them I have them entered on the breeders' register, and that way my name stays with their particulars for ever; in the case dog is impounded and owners cannot be contacted the microchip registry call me and I have the right to bail the dog out.  I imagine I would have to pay the fine applicable, but at least the dog would be safe - it has not happened as yet.  However, in NSW and possibly in other states, the breeder's details are not kept.

Some councils now require dogs to be sterilised by the age of 3 months

Really? Which councils for I can't find any that require this?

Anyone that says a small dog can't / unlikely / doesn't do as much damage when attacking has blinkers on. Ever seen a Jack Russell savage another animal 😞 ....... they don't have a preference for anything small either.

I would trust a large dog over a small dog any day....and  yes my grandies play with my 2 dogs (border collie and lab) without me ever feeling anxious. It's the old cat that worries me:(

Oh, I agree with twinkles on both those points - hug, hug, hug

Re: And another toddler mauled to death by a dog?

Our local council, NSW, pet registration (lifetime registration).

All dogs and cats that are 6 months old or over need to be registered and microchipped.

  • Microchipping and registration applies to all dogs. For cats, microchipping and registration only applies to cats purchased or owned after the 1st of July 1999. Registration covers the entire life of the animal.

Once Only Lifetime Registration Fee

Registration fees help councils provide pound services, rangers, dog refuse bins, and other pet facilities. Lifetime registration can be done at your council. When you register your dog or cat you will need to bring:

  • A certificate of microchipping or a letter from your vet.
  • Proof of desexing from your vet or a statutory declaration.
  • Any documents which entitle you to a discount.

Re: And another toddler mauled to death by a dog?

It costs us $99 Council fee for each dog, every year.

Re: And another toddler mauled to death by a dog?

That is quite a bit $99 per year. Councils should make an effort to have lower annual registration pet fees, so people can't use high fees as an excuse not to register their pet.

Lifetime Registration:

Enitre cat or  dog $150

Entire cat or dog owned by registered breeder $40

Desexed cat or dog $40

Desexed cat or dog, pensioner $15

My previous post quoted from local council said the dog\cat must be desexed but they have a fee for entire  (undesexed) dogs/cats for non registered breeders..

Smiley Surprised

Desexed pensioner?   Only $15?

Do they cause that much trouble?

lol, Polks, that is exactly how it is written.

Fees above are our council, they have just moved to life time registration but we are expected to pay per year still? Not a lot of price difference for pensioners?

Re: And another toddler mauled to death by a dog?

Good to see that most councils still give the option to wait with desexing till the owner decides they want to do it.  When the new bill was introduced in 2008, I remember a number of people who bought pups from me soon after were living in areas where the 3 months desexing requirement applied.  I assumed that it is still valid, but the only council I have found now is the Frankston.
