This is so sad - and so preventable. I just read about Obama's address to the nation and it is such a shame that his hands are being tied by those who support guns, guns and more guns.

The only thing I have time to say on this topic is for sure, must be horrible for the families, like a nightmare... But do any of you honestly think gun reform will stop these mass shootings?  Taking peoples guns will only make it worse imo...

Realistically, gun confiscation is a fool's errand.  What we need are reasonable and enforcable laws, and draconian punishment for violators.  Unfortunately, every time a reasonable solution is proposed, the fondlers (and I include the NRA amongst them) jump up in arms, claiming it is a plot to grab their guns, and threaten their congressional delegates and senators with removal from office.

And goldenjet, why don't you start a thread about the good things in America.

PS, Oregon isn't a particularly liberal state, we are simply more progressive and imaginative.  Oregon was the first to pass legislation to protect her waterways, introduced the first "bottle bill"(both under a Republican governor), and was concerned enough to initiate the "Death With Dignity" act.

With respect goldenjet, I don't think you can realistically visit an au chat room from overseas and not expect to get an Australian perspective on the topic of discussion.

I just listened to Obama's address. A great speech  and delivered  with great restraint, but you could hear the anger and frustration underneath.

His hands are tied by this thing we have called a "Constitution". If we could just get rid of that, we could be just like the rest of the world. As far as his speech, you should contrast that with the speech he gave about the approximately 50 people shot in his hometown of Chicago over the last couple of weeks. (Don't bother looking. He was silent on the subject. Maybe he should check out #blacklivesmatter)  And the several hundred "mass shootings" mentioned in an earlier post were mostly gang shootings and happened in cities with very restictive gun laws.

The Constitution enshrines "the right to bear arms." Is it possible to qualify that, after all an air rifle is a firearm and carrying a home made slingshot could be described as "bearing arms."What is or isn't permissable?  Are American citizens constitutionally allowed to set up missile launchers in their front yards?

That is a classic oxymoron.

As for the US Constitution,  many citizens of the USA do not appreciate the 2nd Amendment (apart from the never ending  "right to bear arms" part,  and certainly do not comprehend the significance, within the Amendment,  of the opening words  :  "A well regulated Militia "

"A well regulated Militia  and gang shootings  would together represent  yet another oxymoron!

I watched this "breaking news" story unfold on the morning news; 10 people dead, such a tragedy.

Meanwhile, the ticker tape at the bottom of the screen rolled on...

US cargo plane crashes at Kabul airport, 10 dead.

Such a tragedy...
