You said I had a good point. I did. The meaning of a word.

I also, said, that words have an emotional context and should be used carefully. Lloydslights expressed that, beautifully, in post 29.

Re: Another Terrorist Attack In US.

I know it sounds like I'm using a "soft" term when I say Civil Disobedience, albeit writ large, but these gentlemen don't seem to be cut from the same cloth as Timothy McVeigh.

https://www.google.com.au/search?q=Tim+McVeigh&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=UUiKVr_wKeevmAWJ3o-YBA

I'll say it now, I could be completely wrong about them, but I get the feeling that they're not "nuts", they're people who have a grievance.

Admittedly, this is not how I would choose to protest, I do not agree with their methods, but it's not my place to label them.

The situation reads like a multi layered and very complicated issue, of which I have seen all of a bit of a percent of.

I can't pass judgement on something of which I feel I don't have a full understanding of.

I wish them the best of luck in finding a peaceful resolution to not only their current situation, but the issues which have arisen in the longer term, which has brought things to where they are.

Re: Another Terrorist Attack In US.

They may well have a just grievance but they have guns and according to media reports they are calling on patriots from all over the country to come and join them. If this happens and you get enough gun- toting "patriots", all convinced they have "God on our side" psyching each other up in a siege situation and it could well escalate into another Waco.

An article in the Sydney Morning Herald points out another danger too:

But as the Bundys know, in situation like this, with self-styled "patriots" from different groups and different states converging to join an armed stand-off, the flashpoint to violence might not be action by authorities.

During the Bundy Ranch Stand-off a dispute between the Michigan Militia and another right-wing activist group, The Oath Keepers, almost led to a shoot-out.

Re: Another Terrorist Attack In US.

Too bad there wasn't a proper thread posted from the beginning. A couple of interesting facts I noticed in the paper today.

One being....The Hammonds were convicted of arson. According to them it had a purpose, getting rid of invasive weeds and back burning in case of wild fires. Generations of this family have taken care of these lands which were siezed by the Feds. It was there land period. Now they were being charged money to use their own land. Does the government need money that bad?!

Also, the dispute was over changing borders due to river erosion...the Feds seized the opportunity for a land grab. They've used this scheme to seize lands elsewhere also.

But what really caught my attention...they were convicted and ALREADY served their time! That's right. Then some judge comes along and says it wasn't long enough...didn't fit minimum guidelines, and after they were already freed, sentenced them to additional time.

So now they are ordered back to jail. Just compounding the injustice. So they're protesting, and rightly so. It's the first judges mistake, so they should have wrote it off.

If they were ignored, they'd get bored after a couple of weeks and go home. Simple.

The Hammonds were found guilty in 2012 of setting a series of fires, including a 2001 blaze intended to cover-up evidence of deer poaching that went on to burn 56 hectares of public lands, according to federal prosecutors.

The younger Hammond was initially sentenced to 12 months in prison and the father three months, below the federal minimum for arson, but a US district judge in October raised the sentences to five years. They were due to report to prison on Monday.

That's right. Seems unfair doesn't it?  Could you imagine serving time, then being released. Sitting home all warm and cozy that it is all behind you, then getting that letter!

Seems pretty cruel if you ask me.

what about this then?

Harney County Sheriff David M. Ward warned residents to avoid the refuge, about 30 minutes south of Burns, and warned that the group’s intent was nothing less than total overthrow of the government.

“These men came to Harney County claiming to be part of militia groups supporting local ranchers, when in reality these men had alternative motives, to attempt to overthrow the county and federal government in hopes to spark a movement across the United States,” Ward said in a statement Sunday.
