OK, I have heard of something like this one, they do want you to panic and then start giving your details...car rego, date of birth, bank details for a settlement so they do not get the police involved...not had one like it yet, but know of them.
Also, if ever anyone gets a call supposedly from the police over accidents etc., get their name, position, and station, if you have no idea what it is about. Then you can check, by calling the station directly.

Kylie, I have been getting that call for a while now.
At first I thought it was genuine as someone had bashed into our van and smashed the rear lights.
It did not take me long to wake up to the fact that it was a scam of some sort, although I am not sure how it works.
They profess to be from "your insurance company" and want you to commence legal action against the other person. As our claim had already been settled I knew it was a con job so just hung up.
Now when I get the call I just say they have the wrong person and hang up.

I have a silent no, and am on the 'do not call' list....but computers still ring me...when they do I leave the phone on the bench & walk away...they can talk to themselves 🙂

Kylie, if it's any comfort, I doubt very much that they actually do have your phone number. They are working with a computer that just keeps ringing numbers in sequence and the only ones they are interested in is the ones who get sucked in. It would be unproductive and far too time consuming for them to save the numbers of all those who abuse them or just hang up on them.

Thought this was worthy of its own thread not tacked onto the other "phone scam" thread...
This one has happened on several of our work lines and yesterday to my home phone ...
They inform me that they have been informed that me or someone in my house has recently been in a car accident!?!?
Yeah, I had that one.

My elderly Mum got one this morning, she didn't understand what was being said only that they told her to dial 3 on her phone. She is smart, she hung up

Darn! I just put this scam into the other thread!
Hasn't happened to me, but it has to my BIL.
