Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I have become adicted to Ancestry.com and am lucky enough that one side of my family can be researched way back into the dim times.

The other side has hit a brick wall and I have to wait until someone else in the world may have more information.

How is everyone else going?

Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

2chappies it's in Victoria, Maryborough way.

I have a question I get so tempted to make my tree private due to people taking the info I have searched long & hard for but I struggle with thinking they are all our ancestors if I find something shouldn't I be happy to share that openly? Your thoughts?

My auntie sent me a photo of my great grandmother in Scotland and I found I have 2nd great grandparents in an unmarked grave in the cemetery near Maryborough which I am going to get a plaque made ๐Ÿ™‚

It's all very exciting!

Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

Hello everyone, dropping in for a coffee ๐Ÿ™‚

Clair leave it public.  It is all the research we all do that goes towards more information that makes it easier for others.

There is always the chance that with the further information you have, that others will realise more and be able to add to it.

It's a world wide thing really, and, as these people have many ancestors, I believe we should share ๐Ÿ™‚

Nothing is gained by keeping it to ourselves.

How wonderful to find an unmarked grave and know who they were.  Getting a plaque made is a wonderful idea.

Flashie loved reading about Tut, his was really an incredible discovery and even today archaeologists quote Carter when they open something really good and someone asks what they can see...

"Wonderful things."  ๐Ÿ™‚

I still can't break down the brick walls for my father's family, nor for my maternal grandparents... I have given myself many a headache trying.

My maternal Grandfather's line is incredible tho' it just keeps going and going.

I tend to forget that each of these people contributed to my existence and just love the history I am reading.

Happy digging and delving ๐Ÿ™‚

Clair.............I think it is a personal thing......whether you leave your tree open or not.

When I first started I had my tree open and got a bit annoyed with people copying my information..........especially when some of it included research I had paid for..............and certificates.

So I am happy to share my tree when contacted.

Darkie.............my research in some of my branches had come to a stand still too........................it is stopped because they were either Irish....changed their name...........or were illegitimate.

Chappies...............I think I might play with that bit of family this weekend and see if there is much of a connection.

If there isn't I can always remove them.:_|

Re the unmarked grave...you may not be able to just put a plaque on it.  You had better check the rules with the Cemetary Trust.

My grandfather is in an unmarked grave in a local Cemetary and it was my father's greatest regret that he never had a headstone put on the grave.  I decided to honor his memory by putting a headstone on the grave but when I enquired at the Cemetary Office I was told that I had to do a full grave with all the trimmings....at least $5000 worth and a great deal more to get something really nice.

I just could not do it after paying for my father's cremation.

My great grandmother's grave is nearby, also unmarked...she died just 11 months after my grandfather, so no wonder my grandmother could not afford 2 headstones...they were expensive even back in 1940-41.

Actually Flashie, I had someone research the Gibsons of Durham and was prepared to pay for it, but he found absolutely nothing about them.

As there was a large number of Gibsons in Scotland and Durham is very close to the Berwick on Tweed township where so many battles were fought, I have to wonder if a Gibson man decided to move away from Scotland and settle quietly during one of the battles... I am sure it happened often.

I have a lot of Irish ancestors in northern Ireland, are your lot from the north?  We may have some in common.  If they are, I have a bit of history there that might help.

What names are you looking for?

Darkie..........I was really happy with the research this lady did for me......it was well worth the money..............she was very thorough.

It was just disappointing that the answer was just not there for us to find.

My Irish names I am looking for are Reilly (Westmeath)..........and Mcgovern and Newman (Dublin)............all convicts..............but nothing useful is on their convict records................except two of them are mother and daughter with no explanation for the different surnames.

ag lab is basically a farm worker, ag being short for agricultural.
