Thursday, November 22, 1956. : The opening ceremony for the Melbourne Olympics is held.
Melbourne was announced as the host city for the Games of the XVI Olympiad on 28 April 1949, beating bids from Buenos Aires, Mexico City and six other American cities by a single vote. The Olympic Games commenced with an opening ceremony on 22 November 1956. Because Melbourne is located in the southern hemisphere, the Olympics were held later in the year than those held in the northern hemisphere. Strict quarantine laws prevented Melbourne from hosting the equestrian events, and they were instead held in Stockholm on June 10, five months before the rest of the Olympic games began.
Despite boycotts by several countries over international events unrelated to Australia, the games proceeded well, and earned the nickname of "The Friendly Games". It was at the first Australian-held Olympics that the tradition began of the athletes mingling with one another, rather than marching in teams, for their final appearance around the stadium.

I remember those 1956 games flashie... Gosh it seems like so very far away and long ago.
That's when you had to go to the movies to see the newsreels on the events, and even then they were in black and white.
To my delight I have found an author called Elisabeth Chadwick who writes historical novels and in them I have found some of my ancestors.
It has been an amazing journey that I have taken over the last year and I have learned so much.
Of course if truth be known we are all related to well known people - they were so intent on having children by the dozens that it would be unusual to not be related to them....
But that is just one quarter of my immediate grandparents and I can't make a move on any of the other three... it's driving me crazy.
I do suspect that the Gibson line was originally in Scotland where there is a large contingency of them and no doubt one or several of them chose to stay or were stranded in Durham after the Battle of Neville's crossing in 1346, but there is absolutely no sign of them anywhere... sigh ๐
Love you snippets of history ๐

I think the photos I have found along this journey have been the best bits................it is wonderful to see their picture and see who they look like.
I found a picture of a Great Great Uncle who looks so much like my brother that they could be twins.........even though they were born over 100 years apart.
Saturday, November 23, 1963. : TV series 'Doctor Who' first airs on BBC television.
'Doctor Who' is a British science fiction television series produced by the BBC about a time-travelling adventurer known only as "The Doctor". It aired for the first time on 23 November 1963, on British television. The initial broadcast was interrupted by the breaking news of the November 22 assassination of US President John F Kennedy. The show has developed a cult following amongst science-fiction fans, and is well known for its innovative use of low-budget special effects.
Declining ratings and a less prominent transmission slot saw 'Doctor Who' suspended as an ongoing series in 1989 by Jonathan Powell, Controller of BBC One. A Doctor Who movie was broadcast on the Fox Network in 1996, co-produced between Fox, Universal Pictures, the BBC, and BBC Worldwide. While it was relatively successful in Britain, its lack of popularity in the United States meant that a new series was not pursued. However, a new series was planned nonetheless, and eventually aired on BBC One on 26 March 2005, and in Australia on 21 May 2005. The USA has not taken up the new series.

That's interesting about Dr. Who flashie... I did love watching Christopher Ecclestone and David Tenant, but I can't for the life of me like Matt Smith... to me he looks cross eyed ๐
Isn't it amazing how likenesses can carry over generations and years.
Talking of photos I found one in 'Heritage' that a 2nd cousin in the USA had of my Grandfather's family group. It included my G/Grandfather and G/Grandmother, my Grandfather and Grandmother and my mother at about 3 months old.
This was taken in 1910 in England and was in remarkable condition, so I nabbed it, but did also tell my cousin I had done so... It was certainly a 'lost' photo on this side of the Pacific ๐

The photo I found, I look exactly like that 2nd great grand father, as does my dad. I look like my dad. The person had some great family information which I've taken but I've asked her if I can add it to me tree.
on โ24-11-2012 01:30 PM
Always worth asking clair... the other thing I don't do is, if I come across information in Google that has copywrite, I don't copy it, thinking I would be found out.
But I do take the bones of the information and then comprise a note of my own. I know that's alright.
on โ24-11-2012 01:40 PM
Yeah well this was like family information, seems the person she is tracing was my great grandfathers sister. Wonder how she knows all that stuff?
on โ25-11-2012 06:44 PM
Probably because she is also related to your grandfather's sister.
We tend to forget just how many people come from our ancestors.
We don't know even a 10th of them.. she will be a cousin no doubt, you should contact her and see what she knows.
You might be able to exchange information.
I have found cousins in WA and also the USA and the UK, we all have descended from the same people who have had more than one child.
Sisters and brothers have children who have children and the next thing we know we are part of a huge complex ๐
We are not alone, not ever and it is worth remembering that.

Yes I just wasn't close to that side of the family as they were in Perth and we were in Adelaide and most of them have now passed. I continue to discover so much interesting stuff everyday it's truely amazing. I hope she contacts me ๐
