Tasmania began as a second colony in 1803, administered by the Governor of New South Wales. In June 1825, Van Diemen's Land, as it was then known, was separated administratively from New South Wales, and Hobart Town was declared the capital of the colony. The colony was officially renamed Tasmania, in honour of its discoverer Abel Tasman, in 1856.
In 1869, Queen Victoria proposed that each of the colonies in Australia adopt a flag, which should consist of a Union flag with the state badge in the centre. The first Tasmanian flag was adopted by proclamation of Tasmanian colonial Governor Sir Frederick Weld in November 1875, but as it included two badges - both a white cross and the Southern Cross - it was discarded within two weeks.
A year later, it was decided that the badge should consist of a red lion on a white disc. The new flag was adopted on 25 September 1876, and has remained virtually unchanged since then, with only a minor alteration to the lion.

ONE OF OUR FRIENDS ws searching ancestors via online webpage sources.. it was so funny , he actually thought that just becuase he read it on a web page without viewing any documentation or searching documentation that it was related to him just by having the same name.. however this may not be so.. i have found that doing it the same way- there are a few hundred people online with the same name as my great grandfather.. anyway so this freinds story got really obcessive when he told me that he was a direct decendant of adam and eve.. haha i had to laugh because it seemed to me that he was claiming ownership, it was as if he had forgotten that suppossedly all humans came from adam and eve, not that i particular think that is feisable.. and the funniest was when he announced that he was related to odin of asgard.. even now i have a giggle when i think to it... i asked him a few questions about odin of asgard because i had studied mythology several years ago .. do you know that asgard means realm of the gods? do you know that odin rode an 8 legged horse called sliepner across the skyes? and that there were a little rat who would climb down the world tree to the end of its 9 roots and bring back to odin all the tales of what was happening to give odin supremem knowledge over his worlds.. under yddrasil(world tree) .. it is very addictive searching ancestory and the internet has given us a wonderful source of information but make sure its correct about your lineage's .. or somebody else might get a giggle

I have become adicted to Ancestry.com and am lucky enough that one side of my family can be researched way back into the dim times.
The other side has hit a brick wall and I have to wait until someone else in the world may have more information.
How is everyone else going?

A friend of mine is a direct descendant or King Edward (not sure what number, the one out of Braveheart). When I checked his lineage, because I was skeptical, I found the claim that King Edward can be traced back to Adam & Eve. Clearly most of it is myth when you get far enough back, but it is kind of interesting.
Perhaps your friend has traced back to that king also?

The area of Western Australia where Albany now stands was first discovered by George Vancouver in 1791. After being sent to explore the southern coastline of Australia, Vancouver first made landfall at Cape Leeuwin, then travelled southeast. On 28 September 1791, he discovered an excellent harbour which he named "King George the Third's Sound", later shortened to King George's Sound or, as it is now, King George Sound. Standing at Possession Point, Vancouver formally claimed this land as British territory on 29 September 1791.
British occupation of King George's Sound, the first settlement in Western Australia, did not begin until 1826. At that time, the western third of Australia was unclaimed by any country, and there were fears that France would stake its claim. To prevent this, Governor Darling of New South Wales sent Major Edmund Lockyer, with troops and 23 convicts, to establish a settlement at King George Sound. They arrived in the brig 'Amity' on Christmas Day in 1826. Lockyer initially named the site Frederickstown after His Royal Highness, Duke of York & Albany, Frederick Augustus โ second son of King George III.
