Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I have become adicted to Ancestry.com and am lucky enough that one side of my family can be researched way back into the dim times.

The other side has hit a brick wall and I have to wait until someone else in the world may have more information.

How is everyone else going?

You need to register first....at no cost...then order your certificate.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Darkie...are you sure this will help with you Gibsons.....civil registration didn't start in UK until 1837.....so there are only BMD certificates available from that year.....if you do purchase a certificate online you will need to lookup the reference online first......this can be done at no cost on Freereg.......your UK certificates are 9 pound 25 I think....and you can leave a reference.....as in John Smith 1850.....father John.

If you want earlier than that you will need to go for parish records....and the microfilms for them are available on order at your local Mormon family centre for a small fee....and viewable there.

You can find the microfilms you need on familysearch site.

Thanks for that information Flashie, I will take a look...
I have tried to find the Morman family research site, but have no luck so far, can you give me a link?

My cousin swears by them (I wonder if that's the right word :-)) but no matter what I try I end up in the religious side of their site.

Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

Hi and just wondering if everyone doing all the research for their ancestors are backing up their computers.......computers being computers are and have been known to crash and totally lose everything:(

JV IF you use one of the sites like Ancestry.com then you can do what you like to your computer the information is there for you when you can get back to it.

I didn't research anything for a year because I couldn't afford to pay the membership, but it was all there when I got back to it, so unless Ancestry crashes along with, say Wikkitree, where you can upload your tree, it is safe.

I do have it on Family Tree Maker as well, so all things being equal I think all is safe, but worth a mention thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

Here's a site that could prove useful for ancestors in Northern Ireland and it's free.

This is the new famly search site.....I find it a tad hard to navigate and eliminate stuff that has nothign to do with what I am searching for.

https://www.familysearch.org/

This is the old family search which I prefer.

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

A handy thing with the old one is if you clickon the advance search you can do a parent search......put the fathers name in and the mothers.....sometimes you get better results if you don;t put themothers maiden name in.

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

And this is a link to Freebmd......it has nearly all BMD since civil registration in 1837 in UK.

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

ANd this is another handy site....it has some parish records transcribe way way back......but not all areas are covered.

Thank you for all those links Darki and Flashie, they are all now in my 'favourites' for future use.

I discovered a convict this morning, sentenced to death for stealing five pounds and then transported. The most interesting thing about him so far (I have not read it all) is that he was 6ft 2in which I think might have been slightly unusual for those days?

Congrats on your convict primary aim. Yep I would say 6 2 would be a biggy for those days. Thank goodness he got transportation instead of death or else your tree could have been very different.

I am having a blonde moment.....can someone have a little look for me and tell me where on this site I can access the 1911 Scottish census....I am in danger of a case of computer rage here....I can't find the actual page.
