Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I have become adicted to Ancestry.com and am lucky enough that one side of my family can be researched way back into the dim times.

The other side has hit a brick wall and I have to wait until someone else in the world may have more information.

How is everyone else going?

Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I don;t have a family skeleton as much as an error.

I decided to research my family.......the Only information I ahd was my grandfathers name and my grandmothers christian name as my parent died when I was young.

After thinking I must come from aliens because I couldn't;t find ANYTHING, I finally started making headway.

I was very excited when I found our original ancestor was a convict and came from a small village in England......population about 240.....and about 2/3 of those were of this surname.

There were two people born in the same village within months of each other with exactly the same name.

I took one look at one of the parents and decided then that particular one was not mine.

I spend the next 12 months tracking that family and had managed to put about 300 people in my tree....and I was quite pleased with myself.

and then one day this person off ancestry contacted mea nd said he was sorry but I had made a mistake in my tree.

I was so darn sure I was right....and kind of hinted to this person that the error was not mine.

well many emails later.....and copies of his family bible.....yep he was right...I was so wrong.

I was so devastated that I nearly gave it all away.....I just couldn't face all that time and effort were for nothing.

My husband and children knew how I felt about all the work I had put into this and paid for a professional researcher to look into my family for my birthday.

And yep....the other guy who I has decided in a second was not mine was mine...........and a cousin of the other one who I had claimed first.....so all my work was not for nothing.

And my lesson was.......pride....I had decided because the other guy was illegitimate that he was not mine.

And I can say now I have investigated all his life I am proud he is mine.....he face horrible starvation that made him steal....which was something very much against his nature.......he never saw his country....wife and twin daughters again....he wife lost the child she was carrying when he was arrested.

Yet he never lost faith...he became a lay preacher here.....and had 16 children......and ironically all his sons became Policemen here.

Gee that is a bit of waffle isn;t it.

How's this for interesting. My father was born out of wedlock, to a young mother and a not so young father. My father tells me he was born in Melbourne. My mother says he's full of rot, he was born in Tassie. His mother died, I don't even know her name. He went to live with his father and his wife, bless her she accepted him as her own. His sisters were late teens when he was born. She still lives in Footscray. His dad died, I don't know when.

Now the interesting part. When my house was being built my mum was about 8 or 10 and lived down the road. She played around these houses, she wasn't allowed to have a cat so she kept a stray kitten in a house while it was being built...probably my house?!

And it gets better. When we needed to do building work we got the plans from the council and you'll never guess who the plumber was? My grandfather! My dad's dad. I asked my dad and he can remember his pa plumbing houses on this street, he used to go to work with him sometimes.

The name on my plans is Jack. But I kinda doubt that was actually his name.

that was a bit of a bummer..wasnt it.

but it can be so easy to accept or dismiss something, and it can certainly lead you up the garden path!

it is amazing how we can often find a seemingly 'insignificant' ancestor is one who is inspiring & heart-warming..

oooh oooh..I have one..

my partner inherited an oil painting, it was painted by a very famous australian artist who had been good friends with my partners dad..
and is a copy of a postcard FIL had bought when on holiday in England years ago

it is a painting of a cricket match being played in the grounds of a Castle in England in the 1870's..

WELL..in my family history I found that my 5xgreat grandmother was the daughter of the Castle owner & was probably living there at the time the cricket match was being played!
I wonder whether she was looking out of the window that day? lol

So this oil painting is probably even more meaningful to me than it is to my partner..lol

Yeah I've tried John. It'd be nice if I could ask my dad and actually get the truth. He told me when I was 10 the woman who'd brought him up had died. My mum suddenly remembered one of his sisters married name about 3 years ago and looked her up and rang her and she said the old girl is still living independently:O I dunno why people have to tell such porkies:-( And my dad has told so many of them there's no point in asking him because I'd just assume he's lying.
