Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I have become adicted to Ancestry.com and am lucky enough that one side of my family can be researched way back into the dim times.

The other side has hit a brick wall and I have to wait until someone else in the world may have more information.

How is everyone else going?

Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I just got this email.

Dear "my husbands first and last name"

I am an international probate genealogist on the trail of relatives for 'John ***** aka John *****'.

He was born in Alberton Township, Alberton East and Alberton Parish, District of Melbourne on the 15th of June, 1932.  If you have any information on any living relatives please kindly respond to me.

So, I am 99% sure that its a scam, I have never heard of Alberton in Melbourne. But how did they get hubbies name? Most scams dont come with a valid name attached to them, do they?

Has anyone else received anything like this?

Punch, I haven't heard of these emails but if you suspect something fishy, report the email to 'Scamwatch'.  I'll have a look on their site to see if there's anything like you received.  I'd be suss about it, even with the two names correct.

I'm definitely suss and I wont reply. I have hovered my mouse over the email address links and they are just email addresses as far as I can tell. oOne of them is a .org address.

I dont have a very common surname and my husbands name doesnt show when I send emails, only mine.

I have been in contact with some of hubbies distant relatives, I might check with them and see if they got the same email and that maybe they should be wary.

Does anyone have access to the South Australian Biographical Index ? approx 1852?

Apparently an ancestor of mine is in it.  The CD is $100 and the closest library that has it to me is a four hour round trip, which I plan to do soon, but thought here might be worth a try

This is the only site I have in my bookmarks for South Australia.

Have you just tried googling your ancestors name?

Thanks flashie, I have googled his name  and searched on Trove (which produced a plethora of articles), but I'm interested in what is on the CD.  Apparently its like a mini biography on whomever is listed in it.

Happyroo, there is an Alberton http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberton,_Victoria

Doesnt sound like there is much of the town left now. I think I would look into it with an open mind before I wrote it off as a scam.
