Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I have become adicted to Ancestry.com and am lucky enough that one side of my family can be researched way back into the dim times.

The other side has hit a brick wall and I have to wait until someone else in the world may have more information.

How is everyone else going?

Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

Does anyone know how the Ancestry Family Tree source citations work?

I'm stealing info off someone else's tree, and it quotes a source citation, but when you click on it, it just says "Ancestry Family Tree" as if that's proof that the person existed?

Some of them have the wrong spouse/parents/siblings though, so how can the information be trusted? I know I need to research it myself, and I will, but I dont know how people can get it so wrong.

I have found 1 person in someones tree, born in 1594, but they have her parents born in the 1700's and kids born in the 1800's and her spouse is incorrect according to other sources I have found on the web. Yet apparently there is a source citation for her. Oh and they have her death as 1884, kind of impossible unless she is a vampire ๐Ÿ™‚

I just mean the person who put it in their tree got their information from another persons tree.

If you have connected to that person you can checkout what is in the rest of their tree by clicking on member connect.and click on their tree from there.

My great x2 grandfather isoften wrong in peoples trees on ancestry......many people made the same mistake I made in the beginning and picked the wrong people as his parents.

A few I contacted to offer them the correct parents.....and I got a nasty reply from a few.....so now if I see any errors in trees involving my family I say nothing.

Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I've just discovered some people have put a wife in that supposedly gave birth at 80! don't they check? very annoying to say the least...Now I have to trawl back and back and try and find the correct wife. Some people just mindlessly copy other peoples tree info. without bothering to check the dates! g

So there's no real source to back it up then, you just have to hope the first person did the correct research.

Lucky I've been double checking everything. I do scratch my head at some of the obvious mistakes people are making. its kind of hard, when you're new to it, to remember to stop and read all the information before you copy it.

I always have a giggle when people attach census results, but have the same person living in 3 different counties in the same year.

Is it pretty safe to assume websites like this one http://genes.themalefamily.net/individual.php?pid=KG0001&ged=male_marshall.ged are fairly accurate?

Hahahaa oh dear punch drunk... you can blame a lot of it on the Americans who really have little idea of what they are doing... Sorry all... BUT

If they would just check their dates and realise that parents are born BEFORE the children it would help.

It's why I take a lot of it with a pinch of salt punchy... I have a fantastic tree, but I am very aware that just one wrong person and it could all all down like a pack of cards.

I trust the census records but not all of the Millenium stuff, still I put it in just in case.

It really is a matter of you doing your own research and home work and then use a lot of logic as well...

I try not to change anything without research of my own through Google and I'm always thankful when I find them in Wikipedia as I feel that is somewhat reliable.

Just remember if you end up with Royalty or Barons and Earls that the Americans are crazy for Royal blood and they will sometimes change things to attach to their own trees.

I believe a lot of them are trying to see if they are connected to Catherine Middleton at present. :^O

Phew! Still, generally speaking just go with the flow and keep an alert eye and a logical mind as you are doing and you will find your way throug the maze ๐Ÿ™‚

Punch I usually check at least two sources before I decide if something is accurate enough for me to put in my tree.

I use mainly family search......freereg......freebmd....and scotlandspeople.

The site you asked if it was reliable I believe is a place where peolple can put their family trees....so there is no way of checking if it is 100% accurate.

Kengillard...I have not forgotten you Joseph......I have jsut put everythign on hold until our granddaughter finally is born.................which is hopefully soon.
