Anyone see the interview on ABC24 about the dumb idea of religion in schools?

It was with a priest an enlightened one could have been Father Bob.

I can't find the link showing it but if you can it is a great interview.

His main point was what religion should we teach there are so many different ones practiced in Australia and it is a personal thing of choice in our multi cultural country.

Margo a polite question, why do you HATE religion and the church so much? As you do make your opinion and dislike very obvious  in many posts that have a religious overtone or the ones you start.

Is there a religion or a belief that you follow or like or support or do you just dislike all religions and beliefs in general?

nero_wulf I don't hate religion as such I do dislike the human aspect of it.

All religions are headed by a person in many cases a bigot.

I was bought up RC and actually believed in hell till I was 21 went to church every week followed all their bull.

One day I went to confession and the priest would not forgive me if I did not say I would never do something again, I said I can't promise that I can promise to try, no one can promise never.

I walked out and never been back.

Your second question, if I was ever to follow any belief it would be the Jewish Religion, I believe that to be the only one that does not change their rules according to society of the times.

I think what Father Bob said is right give children a bit of a run down on all religions and allow them to choose what suits them or not if none of them do.

Do you know why scientists are all atheists?

Thanks Margo, excellent answer and I will agree with you on the majority of what you have said and I am much the same except I am C of E

I do wonder if there is a "do you believe or dont believe in religion/god/space ships"  thread  here or would it get way to nasty? 🙂

Do you know why scientists are all atheists????

Are the atheists, agnostic or agnostic atheists that is the question  🙂  🙂 🙂

Margo I was also correct in the fact that you didnt need a mouth piece to run to your defence or to try and turn my polite question to you into something personal, as they tried very hard to do....

🙂

Re: Anyone see the interview on ABC24 about the dumb idea of religion in schools?

Margo, may I ask what your definition of a scientist is?

I ask because my definition of a scientist is somebody who has studied science, practises science and is possibly employed in a scientific field,

I would include in that list professions such as Science teachers, engineers, environmental scientists and doctors/other medical professionals.

I would even go as far as to include pharmacists (chemistry), pilots (physics), mathematitians  and vetinarians (biology) under the banner of "scientist" and then there are people such as psychologists/psychiatrists etc

I know deeply religious people from all of these fields, so unless you have a different definition of what a scientist is, I don't think that it could be said that all scientists are athiests.

If religion should be out of schools for some then what do you think about teaching the basics of Aboriginal history and their Dream Time stories?

I was told by an Elder in the NT that their Dream Time is their religion and that in fact many of their stories work well with Western Religion. He said the stories actually had the same meaning.

Should we then ban the teaching of the Aboriginal culture?

Why? As some sort of **bleep** for tat measure?

The aboriginal people are the original inhabitants and should be included in our education.  Nobody suggested all mention of releigion should be banned.  History includes many elements of religion.

Not all scientists are Atheists.

I could give you countless examples, but lets mention a couple famous ones:

Nicolaus Copernicus - no explanation needed.

A Catholic priest proposed a theory which is  known as Big Bang.

My daughter's Science teacher is Catholic.

(there are also famous Catholic universities)

I could go on and give you more examples of Christian, Jewish and Muslim scientists.

May I ask you what led you to believe that all scientists are atheist?

You are right Nero I don't need a defence team, though maybe IZA figured I am not around much these days so she would answer the question.

Are the atheists, agnostic or agnostic atheists that is the question  :smileyhappy:  :smileyhappy: :smileyhappy:

I think they are more agnostic than atheist, a scientist will believe what there is scientific proof of ( agnostic ) whereas an atheist believes nothing.

Crikey I am really referring to the type of scientist who teaches science after a life of practicing the art of science by discovering cures or answers.

My sons fatherinlaw is such a scientist and we have discussed religion many times he is an agnostic but happy for proof to be shown to him.

His wife is a practicing Jew. Smiley Happy

catmad I think it would be wonderful for children to be able to have aboriginal studies in schools if they had a choice about taking it.

One of my sons took that as a second subject to music to get into UNI, he was very lucky to be able to go to an aboriginal tech and the 2 years there is what got him into UNI.

He is not aboriginal so I have no idea how he got in but it has been the cause of his successful life.

No.. because if one religion is off the cards then all should be.

Personally I think the Dream Time stories are wonderful and my time working up in the NT and spending lots of time working with the Aboriginal communities out at Kakadu were the highlight of my youth. I think all young people should go do the sort of things I did. It gives you a very different perspective on life after spending time with them.

Just like I think that the basics about religion should be taught. The Shat, Where and Why questions make for a very interesting topic.

Re: Anyone see the interview on ABC24 about the dumb idea of religion in schools?

Margo, Sorry I wasn't answering for you.I know that you are capable of doing so if and when you wish to.I was commenting on the thinking, the sentiment and the bold statement made in capital letters HATE of religion and the Church applied to those who may think religious ed may be best left out of the basic curriculum ..given that we are a Country who allows religious freedom within our Country's Laws .....imo is a difficult thing for all schools to apply to all children (as Father Bob himself notes)

I'd prefer children to learn and naturally be modeled our own Country's values which aren't always visibly present even in those who Claim to be Australian and Christian.I don't believe that  cruelty fits with the values of my Country...and when I see supposed Aussie Christians display it  while seemingly claiming superiority and 'more humanness'...I don't know what Bible they have been reading or if even bothering is worth it.

Teaching tolerance of differences would be preferable imo

Australia's laws have their foundations in Christianity.

I would say that's a pretty good reason for it's inclusion.

Re: Anyone see the interview on ABC24 about the dumb idea of religion in schools?

why are we seemilnglt being lead to believe that it hasn't been included since the 1970's ?

that school children don't learn about Anzac day ?

are we being lead to be ignorant of the facts ?

I suppose the benefit is that some who learnt it in school in the 1970's ...

are able to spot so much hypocrisy and at the highest level
