Aussie Couples Keep Secret Cash Stash, Partners Unaware

Nearly 300,000 Australian couples have a secret stash or bank account that their partner does not know about, a new research claims

A financial behaviour survey by TAL Life insurance found that almost one in two couples, that’s a staggering 45 per cent, have one partner with an account that their partner knows about but cannot gain access to.

Three per cent of Australian couples have a totally secret account, with an average amount of $30,000.

Men’s secret stash was bigger with anywhere between $30,000 and $37,700, while women kept $22,300 in theirs.

I think it's good for a woman to have a secret nest egg in case a marriage or relationship becomes abusive or the partner/husband becomes unsupportive.

LOL I guess I could understand my husband looking rather perplexed if I told him I had an escape fund.   I think "emergency fund" covers all situations.

My mother taught me over 50 years ago, to always have

My sister didn't heed that advice and when her husband died

the account for months.

May I ask why the bank froze their account?.When my OH passed away all  our money was in both names and I had no trouble accessing it straight away.

That was back in the 70's.   Banks were a whole other animal back then. I don't

know all the why's and whatnot, but that's what they did.

Re banks in the 70's - we could only get a partial mortgage for our house "because

of the age of the house".    It was built in 1925. They made us take out a personal

loan for the remainder.   And, no, in those days, you couldn't go elsewhere.  You had

to have a savings track record with that particular bank.   No mortgage broker in those days

Why the need only for women to have an escape fund?
Known lots of blokes who've been totally shafted and left flat broke and destitute when their woman "escapes" to her new life she's been setting up with someone new.

Me too Carl, maybe you should ask someone who agree's with the practice, I agree with saving for a rainy day BUT find the idea of hiding money from my husband distasteful.
AND before anyone says "you should have been through what I went through" believe me I have and proberbly a hell of a lot worse!

Yes it does. My response was more to some of the comments posted which, in my view, biased toward only women being hard done by in break ups, and needing the "escape fund".
