Aust Post is considering charging us to get post delivered

"Welfare and business groups say any move by Australia Post to charge a fee for mail delivery would disadvantage low-income earners and regional areas."

Re: Aust Post is considering charging us to get post delivered

I don't want 5 day a week mail delivery for letters. I do have a PO box as it is safer for parcel delivery.

ABS
As computers have become more affordable over time, the number of Australian households using computers and accessing the internet has significantly increased. In 2008-09, nearly three-quarters of households had internet access, up from one in six a decade earlier. ...

....Home was the most common location of access, with two-thirds (68%) of people accessing from this location. This was the case across most age groups, and particularly for older groups, with relatively few people 65 years and over accessing the internet from locations outside the home.

Work was the second most popular location for accessing the internet (35%), particularly amongst the 25-34 and 35-44 age groups (both with 51%). People aged 15-17 years, and those aged 65 years and over, demonstrated significantly lower rates of access from the workplace (8% and 6% respectively).

A neighbourโ€™s, friendโ€™s or relativeโ€™s house was the third most common location (25%). Younger people were more likely to access the internet from other peopleโ€™s homes than older people, with 56% of 15-17 year olds, 50% of 18-24 year olds and 40% of 25-34 year olds doing so.

More than eight in ten (84%) people aged 15-17 accessed the internet from an educational institution, followed by less than half (43%) of 18-24 year olds. These age groups also had the highest rates of internet use from a public library (17% and 20% respectively).

He ought also know that Australia Post is a community service as well as a government business then.  Profit is not the only factor to consider in their decision making process.

Most bills arrive anywhere from 2-6 weeks prior to the payment date, what real difference will it make to anyone if it arrives on a Wednesday instead of a Tuesday?

I dont think the idea is to force people into receiving their bills by email (the companies do that by charging for paper), but electronic delivery is clearly why there is less latters being sent.

*whoopty re. stats and percentages......as freaks says, it's about providing a community service...

for people who WANT IT AND PAY FOR IT

and no-one is forcing anyone to use the service if they chooose not to use it just like I don't berate everyone about driving their cars around instead of catching a bus somewhere.

Re: Aust Post is considering charging us to get post delivered

am*3, are you a shareholder of Australia Post?

You are lucky you are young and prosperous enough to be able to afford and learn all the new technology.

I live in a Retirement Village that has 28 Units and 38 residents in their Lodge. Out of all those people only I and my OH have computers, but no Iphones or fancy pads. Every day I see some neighbours walking to the Mailbox on the Street corner, to post cards and letters. Most days the postie stops at almost every Unit to place mail into the boxes. Is it fair to expect people in their 80s and 90s to start learning again? It is easier for them to take pen to paper than grappling with modern technology.

Nevertheless, greed for profit will always outdo common sense and compassion.

Re: Aust Post is considering charging us to get post delivered

Lind, my mother-in-law who is in her eighties has just returned from a holiday in the UK.  While she was there she sent me two lovely postcards.  I thought postcards were just about a thing of the past and I loved getting them!  It will be so sad when everything is electronic.

Mr Grizz, where you receive letters is a letter box.  Where you post letters is a mailbox.
