Australian of the Year

I don't feel comfortable with the 2014 Australian of the Year, Mr. Goode. I just can't help feeling that if he could not handle the rudeness and bad manners of a 13 year old girl without crucifying her on most forms of social media to make a political point of his own, however justified is  concerning. I wonder how he will handle interjections and comments he finds offensive during his term of office.

we aren't on the committee who get to choose though.

I am aware of that. I assumed it would be okay to state my preferences on the subject.

as it is Australian of the year, maybe we should get to vote on it?

Our country is run and controlled by minority groups.  Australian of the year no longer carries a

ny prestige for normal, multi generation australians.  I was taught "sticks and stones will break my bones, but names can never hurst me".  Living without promoting contraversial issues would make sense to most of us.  This entertainer/footballer with a modern education is a divisive choice,.....but "divide and conquer" has never been more workable than it is today -  personal, political, business, family, recreational.  There is no respect in todays world for anyone with a different opinion from ones own.

Who is and isn't OK with our naming  Fred Chaney as Senior Australian of the year ?

Fred Chaney named Senior Australian of the Year

__________________________________________________________________

West Australian Fred Chaney has been named Senior Australian of the Year for his contribution to indigenous reconciliation and human rights.

The 72-year-old was a federal Liberal minister in the Fraser government in the 1970s and '80s.

But he has maintained a decades-long commitment to indigenous rights - before, during and after his political career.

As founding co-chair of Reconciliation Australia and an early advocate for Aboriginal voting rights in 1961 and for the 1967 referendum, he helped establish the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia in his national role as Minister for Aboriginal Affairs.

Paralympian Young Australian of the Year Updated: 09:25, Sunday January 26, 2014

Swimmer Jacqueline Freney won the hearts of many Australians with her record-breaking haul of eight gold medals at the 2012 London Paralympics.

But the 21-year-old says that kind of support which has inspired her pursuit of happiness in the pool.

Freney was named Young Australian of the Year and was among more than 30 Paralympic gold medallists to be awarded an Order of Australia medal in recognition of their services to sport.

'I'm just so proud and honoured,' she told AAP.

Born with cerebral palsy diplegia, which restricts movement of her legs and body, Freney's eight victories and two world records in London made her the most successful athlete ever at a single Games.

Re: Australian of the Year

I had never heard of Adam Goodes until the racism issue with the 13yr old child, that incident left me wondering why as an adult he acted the way he did by requesting her removal by humiliating her knowing full well the incident would become that nights news.

I see there are many prominent sportspeople who have been awarded the Aus of the Year in the past , but as I don't follow football I'm just curious in what way is Adam Goode better than his peers?

nah, if it was just a set up so you would know he existed ...

they would have chosen an adult to racially abuse him.

not a 13 year old who the security who removed her (while her parents remained seated) thought was older .
