Australian of the Year

I don't feel comfortable with the 2014 Australian of the Year, Mr. Goode. I just can't help feeling that if he could not handle the rudeness and bad manners of a 13 year old girl without crucifying her on most forms of social media to make a political point of his own, however justified is  concerning. I wonder how he will handle interjections and comments he finds offensive during his term of office.

What has motivated Abbott to suddenly give a toss about including the indigenous people in the constitution?

He has zero respect or tolerance for them or their story.

So that we will feel warm and fuzzy and overlook the other stuff he is planning.

Yes, but that does not mean that this man deserved the honor any less than some others who were selected in previous years.

abbott is a hypocrite and much, much worse. I doubt this will trick our indigenous brothers and sisters into thinking he is anything but what he is.

No, it will not, but now we can say "see, we are not racist, we do not discriminate against ATSI people, we even gave one of them the honor of being the Australian of the year .........."  and forget about the grass roots needs.

My answer was to the constitution change, but of course I agree with you about the award.

But it would be naive for anyone to believe that these top awards are not politically driven.

Re: Australian of the Year

I think he is a political choice but if he can contribute to reconcilliation between the aboriginal community and us "white folks" he will be worthy and it will be worth it.

He comes across as a "likable chap" and even if i think there are more people deserving such as pioneers in curing deseases etc and people who promote Australia and don't just get paid for sport or acting or the arts he hopefully will put his profile to Goode work.

Keep it nice, I might cry if you write anything upsetting (like not)
