What gives me pause for thought is that this kind of thing was happening within the lifetime of people I was close to. My grandparents were all born in the 1880s.
I certainly hope none of them were 'put away' for any of the reasons given below.

As I've got a bit of time on my hands I've listed some of the ones I'd be in trouble for ;;
Feebleness of mind (that's a given!)
Carbonic acid gas (after a Coke)
Superstition (won't walk under a ladder)
Gathering in the Head (sounds like me)
Feebleness of intellect (along with No 1)
Mental excitement (when I see choclate)
Greediness (chocolate and more chocolate)
Seductiion and disappointment (a bit vague but could apply)
Overtaxing mental powers (like I'm doing now)
