black and white stripes are considered to be slimming too. The have to be vertical, though. Not horizontal.

I saw an argument about that one too. Not specifically black, just stripes. They did a test dressing people in various stripes and invariably the horizontal was the most slimming.
Don't recall if it was the same program or not. It contradicted everything I'd previously heard but made sense when looking at the examples. The view was that the vertical stripes widen individually, giving the effect of stretching, whereas the horizontal just looked shapely and taller because of the high stack of levels effect. Talking dresses/skirts here, not pants suits.

Yes I saw it on QI but I think it must be true because my dress (size 26) would need more vertical stripes to make it wide enough across my back than say a size 12 dress.
