Brickbats To Coles

Friday night I was looking to buy frozen chips. Friday night is fish n chips night, right?

I usually get either McCains or Birds Eye crinkle cut chips in an attempt to buy Australian.

So all they had in the Fridges was McCains SHOESTRING chips or Birdseye POTATO WEDGES.

All other chips, crinkle cut or straight cut, were Coles brand

So I was forced to buy Coles brand if I wanted crinkle cut. Oh it was cheap cheap at only $2 for the 1kg pack!

So manipulated.

I dont buy (and i rarely eat) hot chips.

What is the quality difference between McCains crinkle cut chips  and Coles crinkle cut chips?
At the end of the day, isnt it all just chopped up potatoes?

Coles brand in other food items is not too bad i dont think. (except tin spaghetti..... *cheap* tin spaghetti in tomato sauce is erk)

There's no difference in quality, the difference is in price.

The Coles brand is cheaper by almost a dollar. Which means the grower is being squeezed to supply their produce in order to boost Coles's profit and price war with Woolworths.

Which is a practice I don't wish to support.

If they're going to play tiddly-winks like that I'll be doing my shopping at IGA.

Im afraid i dont quite understand what you mean....

If the item is cheaper, than surely that means LESS PROFIT for the company.  Wouldnt it?

The supplier (potato farmer) would be on a contract and would be required to provide an amount of potatoes for a set price. Nothing changes there.

If Coles deliberately failed to restock their shelves with competors goods (McCaines crinkle cut chips) then it would be profit margining ...   and illegal i would imagine.
Is that what you are suggesting has been happening?

McCain Foods used to produce the home brand lines until they refused to produce the competing Coles and Woolies brands.

I don't know if they still don't but a lot of their product disappeared off the supermarket freezer shelves after that first refusal.

Within a couple of years McCain vege processing had moved to NZ.

The old farmers get doubly screwed by today's practices.

Yes exactly. But they still need to maintain their profit margins so they squeeze the growers to reduce the price of their product to them. Coles and Woolworths a renowned for it.

The supplier (potato farmer) would be on a contract and would be required to provide an amount of potatoes for a set price. Nothing changes there.

Contracts can be renegotiated.

Yes that's what I'm suggesting.

Goodness. Buy some real potatoes and cook them. Is it that difficult ?

Get real. I finish work at 5 get into home around 7pm depending on traffic. After I've picked up a bit of shopping, like tohave dinner ready by at least 8pm. You think I'm going to stuff around peeling and chipping spuds and deep frying them while I'm crumbing and pan frying fish?

Also, to get the best ouf ot homemade chips they shoul be twice cooked.

I've just discovered the ultimate in fish and chips without fuss - home delivery.  Looked up one of those companies advertised on TV that have takeaways in your area signed up.  I was surprised to find there was a local place that sold pizza...and fish and chips.  So I placed an order.  Delivery was on schedule, the fish was fabulous and the chips were good but too much of them.  I wish it was possible to order less than the minimum!

Next time I ordered fish and potato cakes.  Hmmm.  Fish was fab but the potato cakes weren't so good.  Reminds me of another local fish and chip shop run by a husband and wife.  When he is there the fish is great, the chips are great but for some reason the potato cakes aren't.  When she is there the fish is great, the potato cakes are great but the chips aren't as good   Go figure.

Ha ha gotta laugh at people that eat potatoes. See them lined up at the food court for chips and gravy. All extremely fat. It's sad that fatties don't realize it's what they put in their mouths that makes them fat

I would never eat chips and gravy yuk. I knew a girl who used to make a sandwich out of a whole sausage roll with butter and sauce. She was fat. So what you put in your mouths ultimately results in fat or thin people.

Potatoes don't make you fat it's the stuff you put on them like butter or bacon, sour cream and sweet chilli.

Thanks, Richo, but I don't have a handy Aldi for Friday night chippies. Closest one's about half hour from home and I daren't risk frozen goods in case I get caught in traffic.
