Brickbats To Coles

Friday night I was looking to buy frozen chips. Friday night is fish n chips night, right?

I usually get either McCains or Birds Eye crinkle cut chips in an attempt to buy Australian.

So all they had in the Fridges was McCains SHOESTRING chips or Birdseye POTATO WEDGES.

All other chips, crinkle cut or straight cut, were Coles brand

So I was forced to buy Coles brand if I wanted crinkle cut. Oh it was cheap cheap at only $2 for the 1kg pack!

So manipulated.

Icy--i did mean normal shopping.

Just a small example--woolies in the past had 1kg bags of carrots about $1.80.

Now they are 500g bags for about $1.35.

Aldis are 1kg..99 cents all the time.....................................................Richo.

Oh yes ok. I do a big fortnightly shop at Aldi for basics, and top up with incidentals at Coles or Woolies, or IGA, depending on convenience.

I actually oven bake mine.

I have one of these Icy A171927.jpg

Chips, roast spuds etc, cooked fat free. Just a quick spray with olive oil.I made banana cake in it yesterday.

It has a timer, so you can cook your fish while the chips bake, no worries about watching hot oil.

You know what Richo, I think it probably is Richo proof. You would find it very handy too.

Prices vary, so take time to look around.

ler's keep it in perspective here - you had a choice, there was no actual force.
If you didn't want coles brand you didn't have to buy it.

That's true, but I specifically wanted crinkle cut chips and I didn't want to dump my trolley with the shopping I'd already done and drive to IGA or Woolies to start all over again.

So the only other choice was buy the Coles brand.

I think it's sexist and discriminatory of Coles because they know that it's generally the working woman that is under this type of pressure because men wouldn't care anyway.

And you're right, there was actually no "force" as such. No violence, no abuse.

I dont buy (and i rarely eat) hot chips.

What is the quality difference between McCains crinkle cut chips  and Coles crinkle cut chips?
At the end of the day, isnt it all just chopped up potatoes?

Coles brand in other food items is not too bad i dont think. (except tin spaghetti..... *cheap* tin spaghetti in tomato sauce is erk)

Sometimes the difference is in the cut of the chips and their size.  I've bought homebrand chips that were mostly the end curved bits and even smaller.  It's hard to find a place (or a supermarlet packet) that has genuine good sized and shaped chips.

Fish and chip shops that don't make their own have the option  buying them in different sizes but long chunky ones are the most expensive so you rarely see them.  There used to be a roast chicken place I liked that also sold the good chips (in fact the owner was the person who told me about size options).  His chips were fantastic.  Unfortunately he retired and sold the business.....and the new owner bought the cheaper version - lots of curved edges and not a long chip in the bag.  There may have been other factors of course but ultimately he didn't last long and now the shop has been empty for over a year.

I like to microwave them too (not peeled of course, but I do cut them into halves or quarters depending on size).

I've also part cooked them in the microwave then put them under the grill for some colour and to crisp them up.

So there you go - no oil and no butter.
