Buy My "Yes" Vote

Warnings have been issued to the eBay seller trying to flog their say in the same-sex marriage postal survey for $1500.

A Sydneysider who is selling their ballot paper on the same-sex marriage postal survey has been warned they face possible jail time or a $2000 fine, with an independent senator saying it's making a mockery of the exercise.

The eBay listing, which has been taken down, was published on September 18 and titled, Buy My Vote.

The bid started at $1500.

"What is this plebiscite worth to you", the seller writes in the ad description.

"The reason I'm selling my vote is because either way I don't care, but thought there are people who do."

The seller promises part of the proceeds of the auction will go to help kids battling cancer.

The Australian Bueau Of Statistics, which is conducting the survey, told SBS World News it considers any submission of a survey response that's been bought or sold a criminal offence.

The offence against the Census and Statistics Act 1905 carries a maximum penalty of $2,100. The Criminal Code offence carries a maximum penalty of 12 months imprisonment,” a spokesman said.

Woman LOL

No way this plebiscite is going to truly reflect the opinion of the general public. It's going to be so skewed.

'n that's why I am not voting, too much agro from BOTH sides for my liking   .... IF this gov had any back bone it would have been tabled in parliament and voted on, would have saved 122 million dollars and stopped all this carp.

The article shows SSM supporters have taken over a major traffic roundabout and used it for rallies and permanent displays.

I wonder how the media would report it if opponents of SSM took over a major roundabout for ongoing rallies and permanent displays opposing gay marriage ? My guess is things would turn ugly with SSM supporters removing permanent posters and heckling opponents at rallys. No doubt the council and police would be called in because it would not be legal for any group to commandeer a roundabout, distracting traffic at a busy intersection etc.

But because its supporters of SSM that makes it all OK. While I don't support violence against anyone in this campaign, or any particular side in the debate, the hippocrasy of it all is rather sickening. Its enough to make a supporter of the principle of SSM vote NO !!!

Re: Buy My "Yes" Vote

violence by either 'side' is unaceptable full stop.

as to wether the SSM should be using any public place for displays of anything, well i leave that to the proper authorites.

if anyone has a problem with this display, call police, call council ect ect, dont beat up some random individual because they are near by.

I would be very suprised if some-one has not reported the use of the roundabout by SSM supporters to the relevant authorities. The problem is that the authorites would not be game to touch it, because the SSM supporters would scream " predjudice". It would be too politically difficult, so authorites turn a blind eye and SSM supporters are allowed to break the law.

Unfortunately if opponents of SSM did exactly the same thing, it is far more likely that they would be shut down and told to move on. Whilst I dont personally have a lot of time for the churches etc. I think in this case they are a signifigant section of the population and their views are based on genuine long held beliefs which should be treated with respect, even if you dont agree with them. This is not happening thus hypocrasy I was reffering to.

I agree that the govt should just debate the issue and vote on it in the House, but;

They're not going to do that. They're going to waste our time and our money conducting a plebiscite, the results of which are non-binding either way.

The real point is, should you abstain from voting on an issue just because the issue doesn't concern you personally?

Should you vote No on an issue which doesn't concern you personally but which has the potential to have a very serious adverse affect on the personal freedoms of others if you vote No?

I ask you to consider and not to withold your vote just because you think the govt is a bunch of time wasting, no-hoper, sleazy, money-grabbing opportunists, and you want to make a protest.

I ask you consider that your refusal to vote at all, just like a refusal to vote Yes, can have absolutely no possible adverse outcome for you personally, and yet those same actions of yours absolutely would present a sector of our society with some freedom-limiting adverse consequences . . . and you'd have to bear some responsibility for that . . . for personally causing grief and anquish to a select number of our society because you haven't thought the issue through well enough.

Let's not cast our vote in this plebiscite out of spite nor let's refuse to cast it at all out of petulance or indifference.

Let's cast it considerately, in the best interests of people who have a lot to lose and much to gain, unlike yourself.

Consider . . what would Jebus do?

i see this story not so much about the rights or wrongs of a display of SSM supporters carp as a story of how NOT to act when you disagree with something.

taking the LAW into your own hands by beating up anyone is never OK.

the fact this idiot belted someone who beyond thinking SSM is ok. he didnt create the display, hasnt been in the media decrying the NO voters. he as far as i know, was waiting for a bus. was seen by this creep whilst he was demolishing the display and went over and punched him in the face!

ok, he is against SSM, thats his right, but destroying the display, not his job.

hitting people, not his job.

if found he needs to be held acountable, in court!
