Shame it appears to be failing miserably so far.So far in australia the flu has killed more people and that's WITH a vaccine.
Where did you get death stats regarding common flu in Australia this year ? we are just entering flu season and the infection rate is 1% over last years - are you getting Austral;ia mixed up with Austria ?
We might even reaslise a coronavirus dividend of less people dying of respiratory related fatal conditions - the big three, coronavirus , influenza and non-specific pneumonia

Statistics for the flu this year are well down, because of social distancing.
The figures for April last year 2019 show 18,667 cases.
This year for April 2020 it shows 262 cases

The citizens of Haiti are pondering the question, they are best to answer impartially
However for us the question is more - do we suffer increased suicides in exchange for less viral fatalities ?

The figure for NSW in January 2020 is 61 flu related deaths but please look
and do the sums yourself.

https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/Influenza/Publications/2020/january-influenza-report.pdf
The number of new lab tested and confirmed infections nationally for January 6963, February 7162 , March 5888, April 262 ( Two Hundred and Sixty Two)
updated 4th May 2020
Started off moderately bad but looks like due to mitigation measures will be a good year
now do the maths....

NSW lab confirmed influenza deaths to 2nd February 2020 is 2 (TWO) rather than your quoted 61

I skipped straight to deaths.
For the week ending 24 January 2020, the rate of deaths attributed to pneumonia or influenza was
0.81 per 100,000 NSW population below the epidemic threshold of 0.98 per 100,000 population.
7,544,000 ( NSW population ) / 100,000 = 75.4 * 0.81 = 61 people dead in NSW

In Australia's case....
Wuhan was locked down in late January.
Approximately 100k chinese had disembarked in Australian since the virus had 'officially'
taken hold in China.
Chinese tourists were then being screened on arrival.
The number of asymptomatic transmissions unknown.
Australia closed it's borders on Friday 20th March 2020 almost 2 months after the virus
had caused the lock down of Wuhan and human to human transmission had been verified.
Of course the border closure followed by a lock down were the very last resorts economically
which may explain why our own government took so long to act.
If we are going to blame anyone it should be the WHO.
Taiwan tried to let the world know ( via the WHO ) but the WHO didn't want to step on Big Daddy's toes.
This was in late December 2019.
If China was complicit in gagging the WHO then one hopes ( for whatever practical good it will do )
that some form of punitive action will be taken ( and NOT a bloody war ).
