Can I charge a car battery......

.....while its still in the car??

Or should I disconnect it and take it out before I put it on the charger?

Re: Can I charge a car battery......

Is this a manual? or auto?

btw, can you still clutch start a modern manual car?

I clutch start my bravo if it goes flat - but that's pretty rare.

I have one of those battery power stations for jump starting and 12v power/air etc, but not sure what that would do to a more modern car.

However, remember that some modern vehicles have electronic systems that need to be reset after the battery has gone flat or been disconnected.

:_| I thought this was going to be easy. Maybe i should have just left it alone.

Maybe I'll just call the RACV and let them fix it.

If you're a member, that's what I'd do. - modern cars are a bit finicky- and I'd bet a blown computer would cost a pretty penny...

Or if you have a few hours to wait, charge up the jump pack, that might give it enough to start.

Jump pack's fully charged, it just doesnt seem to be giving it enough kick. It tries to turn over and then just stops.

Re: Can I charge a car battery......

Yes it makes a difference...can't clutch start an auto..... did you leave lights on? or did it just go flat?

If the latter, you might wanna ask them to test the battery = you might need a new one and that might be the cheapest way to go. = call supercheap or similar - they usually have specials.

Re: Can I charge a car battery......

The door was not quite shut for a few days, so I guess an interior light was left on. Not really sure how long it was like that. Its possible the battery was already on its last legs anyway. Its not my car so i dont know how old the battery is.

Re: Can I charge a car battery......

Have found the manual with the jump starting procedure. Apparently for diesels you need to charge for 5 minutes with the other car running before you try and start it.

I might make a better effort of looking for the jumper leads and try that.

lol, believe it or not, that's good news but you might be best off to just buy another one.  they're not that expensive. (or if it's not yours, advise the owner to do so)....in the meantime, go out and read the specs on your battery and do a search on the supercheap, repco and (can't think of the other one...sheesh).  You'll probably find it's quicker and cheaper to buy a new one.
