Children and Elections

I was surprised today at how many parents were tag teaming with their partners when they were voting. Ran into quite a few parents from my kids school who were quite happy to tell me they were able to leave the kids at home while they voted.

We have always made a point of taking our children with us when we vote, it's another opportunity to teach them something. We have also always dragged them out of bed to attend the ANZAC dawn service, even though when they were very young they had no idea why.

 So do you make a point of involving your children in elections, or do you prefer to "escape" and vote in peace?

Do you take your children to the Dawn Service?

I took the kids when  went to vote IF the polling booths were at a school ans there was a fete at the same time as the voting was on.

I don't discuss politic with them when I go to vote, but it is a great time to talk about how our system works, other systems, how how women and aboriginals weren't allowed to vote. Lots of things to learn other than about political parties.

We took ours everywhere we went, it was a rare occasion if anyone else minded them, usually only my parents and they lived several hours away from us. I am stunned at the lengths some parents go to in not taking children out.

My daughter always takes leaflets from The Greens and tells me I need to vote Green.:| I leave her at home. My son tells me to vote labor. 😐 I leave him at home too.

I take my daughter to vote with me.  She always gets a "I voted" sticker they give out for the kids.  She's very enthusiastic.  She also loves Julia Gillard.

As for the dawn service, no, it's too early for her.  She can go when she is older.  She has gone to the march before.  Both my grandfathers were in WWII in the Navy, and she is aware of the war.  I would like to take her to the dawn service, but at the moment it's not something that she would be able to concentrate on.  Marching with her uncle is better for her ATM.

I told my son I will disown him if he votes green and if he votes labor he can't come to Christmas dinner... 

He told me that he is going to vote Labor to spite me.... X-(
