Re: Coronavirus update

its really quite bizare

simon birmingham trying to explain the future of the dole

hes trying to convince me (on ABC radio this morning) that when the govt calls the virus as over (that may well be never of course) that the doubled payments will revert to the previous payment.

so the govt has for a very long time been adamant the old fortnightly payment, about $550 i think, was fair for the unemployed to live on.

then, we get the virus and businesses are closing left right and center, thousands out of work over night.

here we have the bizare part, suddenly $550 isnt enough, they double it!

now those on the dole, all of them, get double!

those who were on the old payment must be loving it

whilst those just getting it for the first time are prolly grumbling its not enough. without a thought of 'hey, how did they live on half of this?'

now simon is saying at some point in the (near?) furure its going to revert back to the old payment.

i await the day his govt reduces the payment, the fireworks will be something to behold.

i honestly cant see it happening but if asked id never have thought the payment would have been doubled either.

interesting times ahead

Just stating facts.

so the govt has for a very long time been adamant the old fortnightly payment, about $550 i think, was fair for the unemployed to live on.

Which is why it is at that amount and which to me is too low and I know a few that do struggle on it.

then, we get the virus and businesses are closing left right and center, thousands out of work over night.

here we have the bizare part, suddenly $550 isnt enough, they double it!

That was never the reason why it doubled and it was explained that it doubled to keep the economy going

and had nothing to do with it not being enough.

those who were on the old payment must be loving it

whilst those just getting it for the first time are prolly grumbling its not enough. without a thought of 'hey, how did they live on half of this?'

That was always going to be the case so shouldn't be difficult to understand.

i await the day his govt reduces the payment, the fireworks will be something to behold.

Why?

They have been given a gift to spend as they please but now they believe it isn't a gift but an entitlement?

i honestly cant see it happening but if asked id never have thought the payment would have been doubled either.

Of course it's going to happen and and anyone that thinks that they are now entitled to double is dreaming.

The ones that only received it when it doubled had other payments to make and it was hoped that that they

would continue to do so and spend any left over to keep the economy going.

The ones that were already on it got it as a bonus to try and keep the economy going and it was always

stated that it would revert back to the old figure.

Pensioners, disability, etc didn't get any extra each fortnight and instead of thinking themselves lucky that the

unemployed received a payment for a period of time that no one else was entitled to they now believe they

should get double for doing nothing?

Is called the " coronavirus suppliment" . My take is that it is offered for compo for changes in living conditions and encouragement in complying with social restrictions for those who as individuals are living mostly in a lawful manner below the poverty line ($914 per fortnight)  - this suppliment increases the social-economic support to just only over the poverty line for the duration

It is not fun being long term unemployed.

I recall that $1 spent in social financial supports reduces law enforcement and remedial expendirure by a factor of 8

The system works , so hopefully there will not be any attempts to tamper

Our behaviour during the crisis and the financial asistance offered at several levels is proof of that

Re: Coronavirus update

I think that it would have been better, fairer and easier to administer if the same total of money spent was spread around to more people.  like giving lets say $350 -$400 per week to all those who lost their job, regardless how long they were unemployed or if they were considered "self employed".

My understanding is that newly umemployed have assess to job seeker , those on " forlough" technically employed but idle have indirect assess to funding via the employer from the "job keeper" supports , Employer or self-employed ( as recognised as viable by the ATO i suppose) have access to funding if their cash flow has declined by a certain percent

Not sure whether fly-in worker visa overstayers are catered for ...

The country has not shut down - once production catches on to split shifts and slow lines to create social distancing with union co-operation in agreeing to same wage for the later shift and other enhancements , there might be even an increase in job vancanies as exporting has not been stopped ( also the wholesale  importation of labour at has been stopped including the mass of visa overstayers )

Also comprehesive online shopping down to local town/suburb level

Re: Coronavirus update

The toilet paper supply crisis has been resolved now with supermarket selves well stocked - how long did it take to resolve ? 2 months ?

This implies that in any future more serious supply chain issues manifesting will take 2 months to resolve - which implies the need for a standard 2 month personal supply or pre-stored alternate contingency solutions in place , ie 2 months supply of long-life packaged meals etc

Over the top ?  I suppose a year ago if someone had have discussed the possibility of toilet paper running out in the supermarkets....

Re: Coronavirus update

Reported that after 3 days from initial infection many people experience loss of smell and taste so a home test from medical sources has been published -  using a jelly bean

https://www.msn.com/en-ph/health/medical/coronavirus-how-to-test-for-loss-of-smell-and-taste/ar-BB12...

Maybe a good standard test at the workplace

ps - checking only for fever and cough will result in missing 60% of currently mild cases (UK environment )

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8302467/Two-thirds-coronavirus-cases-Britain-going-undiagno...

I am under the impression that locally any cold/flu like symptoms is grounds for seeking medical tests with medical credibility - but i do not know whether claimable symptoms include loss of taste and smell
