This is what we should be doing. Funny how the countries with the highest number of cases happen to be governed by righthttps://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-53274152
But your data would suggest that Australia might be looking pretty good if Julia Gillard was still our Prime Minister!
So how do you think she would have done things differently?.
Spoilerbecause actually Australia is looking pretty good.
Have no idea, I'm not her.

SpoilerBut Australia is looking a bit shaky at the moment, with cases rising in Vic, NSW and WA. Maybe we would be the same as NZ if she was the boss.
A little comparison:
NZ population is close to 5 million people with a land area of 268,021 square kilometres.
Melbourne has close to 5 million people with a land area of 9,992 square kilometres.
Trying to compare other countries should only be done if they have similar areas and population spread out
over those areas and the reason why Melbourne is so shaky at the moment is because of the density of it's
citizens similar to what happened and is happening in Italy,Spain and the UK.
So Melbourne and or Sydney were always going to be where a second wave was most likely to come from but
has managed to avoid what could've been compared to those three countries.
Australia has been lucky in that it was easier to control the borders and stop a lot of positive cases getting through
and it looks like it was working only to fall apart because some numpties couldn't do the job they were paid to do.

I think the biggest difference between NZ and Australia is the fact that NZ is politically under one government umbrella whereas Australia has the Federal government and the States and Territories all with their own ideas of the best way of managing - and all trying to protect themselves politically.

That may be true, and probably is. But my comment related to the observation that three countries doing well are governed by left wing, young female leaders. That may be significant too!

As would be their low numbers of population so making it far easier to be able to control any outbreak.

If you base the Deaths on per hundred Thousand, (which is what the scientists do) NZ has done very well.
One of the main reasons is we shut down so quickly, people did the right thing and wore masks and stayed home, we did not feel. boo hoo we cant go to the hair dressers or have our nails done.
We all banded together to fight as one and our wonderful Jacinda handled it so well.
We have a couple of cases who are people returning to the country but we have not had any social contact cases for along time.
As long as the virus is any where in the world we will not be safe, it just takes one person breaking the rules in infect so many
Ok I am not blowing Jacinda's or Nz's Trumpet just stating facts

Based on deaths per capita of population NZ and Australia are almost equal ...... Plus Sydney and Melb each have the same pop as the WHOLE of NZ, there is simply NO comparison .
