I used google maps to try to work out how many SA/Vic border crossings there were.

I think WA has it easy with manning border crossings as they only have 5, with only two of those sealed.

I you check out SW Vic/Sa border you will see what I mean   .....

yeah, I see what you mean . . . but mine was only a cursory count and qualified with There are probably some unsealed roads into SA as well”. And I did ask David how many crossings SA had (didn’t want to do all the work for him Smiley Happy)

my view is both dan and his govt are failing big time and allowing borders to be open and footy teams to be wandering out into other states makes me very angry.

says the guy who lives in a state that has the luxury of so few border crossings.

Just how many state border crossings does SA have David?  (a quick glance shows 1 to WA, 1 into NT, 1 into Qld, 1 into NSW, about 10 into Vic . . . but these are estimates)

There are probably some unsealed roads into SA as well.

The Vic/NSW border alone has about 50 crossings.

david, I live in a border town (actually I live less than 2km from the Murray) and there are two bridge crossings near me, one in Mildura and one at Yelta/Curlwaa. Closing these border crossings near Mildura is just not practical.

Here are some reasons that out-of-towners might not know about:

- there is no major well equipped hospital in NSW here.  NSW residents needing hospitalisation generally come into Victoria . . . especially if suspected of having COVID

- the shortest route for Robinvale Vic residents to get to Mildura Vic (and vice versa) is to cross into NSW at Robinvale/Euston and then back into Vic at Buronga/Mildura

- many people live in one state but work in the other. I lived in Vic for over 25 years while working in NSW.

- we don’t have active cases here on either side of the border.  Mildura LGA (which is huge) has had only 5 cases (none active for well over a month or more)

- border closures would not prevent people from crossing the border as the Murray River can not be effectively patrolled (when I lived in Dareton NSW in 1988 I once swam to Victoria!)

Bottom line is that it is not as simple as saying “close the border”.

Locals know who the blow-ins are ....

Will await his answer 🙂   ...... We are near the Coonawarra gateway, so heaps of people travel over his way from Melb etc, thus the wineries in this region are suffering as well

Bty I have lived in both Lavington ( Albury ) and Corryong so am well aware how difficult it would be to close the NSW/Vic border

Sometimes I think David lives in bubble

Personally I  think they are clutching at straws and trying everything they can try in an effort to eliminate this virus

Not sure what do you mean by "clutching at straws".  If they discover why are children not affected anywhere near as much as adults, that may very well mean we will be able to protect the rest of the population.  And, no, it is not because children have better immune system; they do not.  Children have immature immune system, and that is why normally kids are the 1st to get infected by new pathogen and die.

This is not eastern-bloc - check point charlie - you do not have to guard the crossings - just make clear which way is out town to any that do not belong , who are obvious to those of border towns

However this is a almost unthinkable situation because if Melbourne becomes virus-blown there will be no Wuhan style mass exit - the city will be blockaded by those in towns surrounding - is a matter of containment and survival , and there are community resources already that could deal with that situation, driven by fear of loss

However is best a low key publicity approach as this will not arouse local foreign culture sympathiser sentiment that may hinder successful mitigation by deliberate reckless actions in sympathy will countries of allegiance who are suffering gross loss.

( ie The US CA  chicken pox parties  )

20 or 30 cases a day out of a population of 4 MILLION is hardly cause for panic. Or blockading. I'd love to know where you get the idea (I think, your sentence construction is slipping again) that towns on the perimeter of Melbourne would or could blockade Melbournites if they try to escape from Melbourne.

After all, as you also said, we are not an Eastern-bloc country.

That is how it started in China by late January - once the conditions are ideal it assumes plague contagion - as evidenced where ?

The objective is to have no new cases - one detected case could mean 3 hidden cases
