As isolation drags on,  "non-essential" items will become more essential for maintaining emotional well being

Business closures in Victoria begin today. The decisions on what are essential and non essential seem reasonable, but one " essential " busines that jumps out from the others is newsagents. Is it that X lotto is an essential service people cant live without ?

The newspapers, magazines, arts, craft items, etc are why they would be staying open so people have something

to do and not all newsagents have a lotto outlet in their shop and lotto can be done online whereas with newspapers, magazines people want the physical item.good.gif

I initially thought the same thing, but if that was the reasoning, surely hardware chains such as Bunnings would have a similar justification in staying open.....ie. People could paint their house or put up a set of cupboards during isolation. It would be a lot more constructive than reading a magazine and allow people to feel they had actually achieved something during isolation and the time wasn't completely wasted..

My guess is its about ensuring peoples addictions are met, same as shops selling alcohol are still trading. Alcohol may not be one of life's essentials, but many cant live without it. The Government does not want to inflame rebellion and animosity in the community by taking away things many people in the general population are addicted too.

The virus doesn't discriminate or follow the social rules we have made for ourselves......It is exposing all sorts of grubby little secrets normally hidden or deliberately ignored. I suspect it is also going to expose a lot of other grubby little secrets in our economy before it is finished.

example - did anyone else know that over one million of our jobs where being done by foreign visa holders while our youth where experiencing high rates of unemployment before the virus struck?  Sure we knew foreign visa workers where out there, but the extent ?

The Government realises it is a problem, that is why visa holders are not currently receiving any financial support and are being asked to go back to their home countries. Until now they have been used to ensure a pool of unemployed as worker reserves for big business and to depress wages for Australian workers, pushing up corporate profits..

And another------ Did the community realise that immigration was so prevalent, that a third of Melbourne's population do not speak English in their homes and over half of Melbourne's population where not born in Australia ?  Again we know we have been supporting very high numbers of immigrants, but the actual extent of the numbers ????

Again, governments know that high immigration numbers suppress wage growth and support increasing consumption as well as endless construction industry jobs and corporate profits ( Victoria's largest industry ) . What they don't tell you is they also reduce the living standards and quality of life for individuals already resident in the country.

Most of these jobs are either seasonal like veg and fruit picking or they are skilled jobs that there are not enough people in Australia qualified to do.

That is  incorrect; almost 50% of Australians have either been born overseas OR have at least one of their parents born overseas.  It includes 2nd generation migrants, including those from UK.

I am sure that 1/3 of Melbourne population not speaking English at home is definitely not true.  That might be true about some small enclaves; just like in the past many Italians lived in Carlton and Greeks in Richmond, then later the Vietnamese in Springvale, before they also formed community in Richmond as the Greeks dispersed, when their kids became professionals and did not take over the shops their parents ran.

That is NOT supported by any evidence.  Quite on contrary, every migrant creates 2 plus new jobs.

Much of what you've said just sounds like your  opinion and not based in fact.

As for your last sentence ............   how so?    You do seem to have it in for migrants.
