So what were the other 'distractions'?   I consider him a good leader and I'm apolitical , but it sounds liked a political shot here?

i think this was a 'i need a big anouncement guys' moment

from what ive heard and read its a long shot that there will be a vax for the virus until maybe 12 months if we get a vax.

so doing a big anouncement now on a 'maybe' vax is all about scomo n co looking like they are getting us into the game early

i wont be jumping at the first vax out there, i'll be waiting to see how it fares in the real world befor having it pumped into my body.

my view is 'dont cut corners scientists'

Coronavirus update

240 new COVID 19 cases in Victoria today and another 13 deaths. While there has been a significant drop from the 500 - 700 regular new cases of a couple of weeks ago, numbers seem to have settled into a new normal range of 200 - 300 new cases and around a dozen deaths per day. While those dying from the virus would be a lagging indicator, the new case numbers are not really coming down as quickly as we might expect considering the harsh lockdowns in place.

Is there still a very large number of people who are flouting the health advisories ? At this rate the lockdown measures will need to be extended, unless we see dramatic improvements in the numbers soon. Bit of a worry.

Yes I would have thought there'd be better results showing up now.

"The deal itself is only a "letter of intent" with an as-yet-unconfirmed "final formal agreement" to include vaccine distribution, timing and price — a price which is estimated to be in the billions if it comes off".

The Australian Government is being guided by our scientists and medical experts who believe the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine approach shows the most promise and has high credibility. But they have not locked Australia in because there is no guarantee that they will be successful.

The mental health of many Australians is a real concern ATM due to fear, uncertainty, hardship and some doom and gloom beliefs. Episodes of domestic violence, breakdowns, anxiety and depression are increasing and some experts believe that many more Australians may commit suicide:

“The predicted increase of suicides is 25 per cent each year for the next five years,” Professor Ian Hickie, co-director of the Brain and Mind Centre at The University of Sydney, said. “That’s 750 extra deaths by suicide a year. It's an enormous number. It will be a massively bigger death toll than COVID.”

IMO the Government is trying to instill some 'hope' and 'belief' that we can survive this pandemic and that they are linking with the best and most credible organisations in the world. Whether people choose or do not choose to have the vaccine is their business.
