The article says they guess it came from someone in Sydney visiting over christmas. I thought they could trace each virus cluster and its origins.

Perhaps thats what is they are in the process of doing, these cases were only detected today ( as far as I know )

Tracing is only  partly succesful.

In QLD we have to sign in to hotels, restaurants etc, organised events and yet we can go to shopping malls where there are literally thousands of people daily and no sign in required - hence no tracing.

If you are not border crossing or entering the country and being subjected to quarantine and testing etc,  there is no way to police tracing with the numbers of people out and about.

I think QLD have done well so far, but Tracing is a preventative measure and by no means foolproof

I find it amazing that they can trace the virus. I find it even more amazing they find traces in the sewer.

And there goes our 60 days virus free!

Aren't the Victorian borders closed to NSW?

So, how did this happen?

And there'll only be a tsk tsk - not the lashing that they deserve - no fine, no arrest, nothing.

IMO Gladys should be shutting down the whole of wider Sydney, not  pussyfooting as she sees to be doing atm

Comes across as a weak premier to me         ........ or perhaps she doesnt want to upset her "mates"

Maybe to UK centric - similar pattern regarding mitigation, seems to be more reactionary, and late to act , relying on tracing,  rather than pre-emptive large area shutdowns and restrictions , ie wishy washy hotel quarantine security -the current crisis was suspected international flight crew breaking quarantine and helping themselves to a good time out in the wild.

Lessons should have been learnt form the Victorian Government hotel contagion - but sadly not..

I don't feel keeping the NSW economy open is being weak. We will know in a few weeks which direction may have been better but I am sure being the state with the largest economy and population things may be done differently than other states due to these facts.

Actually NSW is expendable - no other State will tolerate a contagion crossing borders and having spent billions and lost countless work-hours eradicating the pest , will not hesitate in hermetically sealing off the borders for how long it takes for NSW to sort itself out - although there are some signs of positive function - hotel guards can now directly enforce quarantine  to ensure compliance

The problem I see with trying to erradicate the virus is there is no cure. If we can't manage local borders and people spreading the virus how will we manage international borders in the future. What if the virus mutates in the future and our herd immunity no longer helps after everyone has taken the vaccine.

The problem with living in a coccoon is it can't last forever. If other states can't visit NSW what hope will there be for them to travel internationally and vice versa. If WA closes its borders so quickly now there is no hope it will allow international travellers in the future.
