Counterfeit items...

1923 Australian Halfpenny Coin (Low mintage - Rare)

The above is an example of a seemingly straightforward listing for a coin worth $1,500 plus.

Why have so many bidders cancelled their bids?

Simple answer;this coin is a 20 cent counterfeit.

How the bidders who cancelled found out item is fake I don't know.

Long gone are the days when members could warn others of fakes--what a shame.

Re: Counterfeit items...

Ok...I'm a relative newbie to both ebay & the "Community" but I'll give my half-pennies worth anyway.

The sad truth of this and other similar situations is that unfortunately here in Australia we don't have a nationally recognized/ANDA Governed coin grading/certification service similar to the PCGS or NGC like our United States counterparts do. We do however have the ability to have our coins graded by the aforementioned "Services" & costly as this may be, official certification of a rare/valuable coin would be well worth the expense & without doubt provides both the buyer and seller a level of certainty that the coins they're buying &/or selling are in fact the "Real McCoy".

This being said, (imho) any collector worth their salt would either not buy such a valuable item sight unseen with absolutely no guarantee of the coins authenticity other than that of the "Sellers Honor" (a commodity worth more than any coin...be that his/her actual honor or their lack thereof) & viewing a few photos.

When it comes down to purchasing "big ticket items", there is no substitute for buying from reputable dealers that you've dealt with in the past, are ANDA accredited or (if as in this case, via ebay)  have a squeeky clean record or if they have had any issues with clients (& let's face it, everyone does from time to time), they have done everything in their power to ensure the buyer is either 100% satisfied with their purchase or have provided a refund.
