Cyclist and 1Meter rule

I just saw Current Affair where they showed a car turn left into two cyclist. The car had his left indicator on - looked like he was travelling at very slow speed - the cyclist overtook the car on the car's left and he turned left into them. Was it his fault or the cyclist who overtook on the car's left?

They were talking about making a '0ne meter' law. I cannot see how this will work on many roads. To keep one meter away while overtaking a cyclist or group of cyclist would put you over the centre line in many cases - risking a head on collision??? It would be OK when there is a separate lane but SO MANY roads do not have enough room for it.

Opinions on this rule?? How would it work?  Opinions on the Current Affair accident?

Yeah.....can see you just want to pick on cyclists pfffttttttt

How many cars run red lights? Wonder why there's soooooo many red light cameras and all these fines for drivers?

Btw some red lights cyclists DO NOT have to abide by and can ride through if safe :)))))))

Look save ur road rage for other **bleep** and just show some patience for cyclists....remember your impatience could cost them their life and they are legally allowed on our roads 🙂

I have to wait until it goes green.

I have no road rage - I'm not picking on anyone - as I said above, I have never had a problem with a cyclist - I was asking for opinions about the Current Affairs program and the fact that some want to make it a LAW nationally.

How would it work? How would it be policed? How would a driver measure that 1m especially when the cyclist is prone to wander???

Re: Cyclist and 1Meter rule

Wander?? ....again education is desperately needed.....we travel in a narrow lane.....in that lane we could find broken glass(lol very common up here) gravel which could cause loss of contact with road, even bloody grates! Sometimes we do need to move over a little....where the metre rule would save a life for sure!

I really think if people used common sense, no scratch that....I really think all car drivers that do not understand cyclists should for one day get out on a busy road on a bike.

I have done a quick search for laws regarding a car turning left and not giving way to road users traveling forward including cyclists....cannot find anything. I will be ringing tmo as I'm just as interested in that....common sense tells me that the car is in the wrong though. Cyclists Must travel to the let of the lane, a car must give way when turning. Wether it be a driveway or a street...I couldn't imagine the law to be as silly as a cyclist must stop and give way even though we are traveling forward and not disrupting the flow of traffic?

Re: Cyclist and 1Meter rule

Cannot quote but what a disappointment seeing you say that hawk.
Next time I'm in my car and I have to make a quick decision about hitting a car or a motorbike I'll take your pov into consideration yeah?

As a motorbike rider on our roads I would think you'd see ths from a safety view? Or maybe not considering a motorbike can use the whole lane.
Btw you riders **bleep** me off when I'm in a car and at intersections you all just ride up between drivers to get to the front of the lights....weaving in and out of traffic....I could say I wouldn't feel bad to hit one but truth is I know it's only the few that act like idiots.

Re: Cyclist and 1Meter rule

I think it is time bikes had rego plates on them and we pedestrians need the 1 m rule too, bikes cannot pass us any closer than 1 m.

I am fed up with bike riders that don't use their bell and yell at me to get out of their way.

Well maybe I am in the middle on the share foot/bike path because the NBN Co still hasn't restored the paving after *bleeping* it up about 7 months ago and if I walk close to the left the jagged pieces of concrete ruin the wheels on my walker/shopping trolley. (search Sholley $299.00 on ebay) I can't afford to ruin any more wheels.

Or better still stop turning barely adequate footpaths into shared cycle/pedestrian paths.

Put the bikes back on the road where they should be.

I will now go and hide as the flak flies.

My thoughts exactly on bicycle riders.

Re: Cyclist and 1Meter rule

I had a look at that ACA story I really think the car driver was in the wrong even if he had right of way.

Why would you force a left turn if you can see 2 bike riders beside your vehicle?

Had the bike riders been a far way behind the vehicle they would have been able to see the indicator clearly but I doubt they would have seen it because the car caught up to them not the other way around.

Re: Cyclist and 1Meter rule

Lol agree with the shared paths...it's just not safe, bikes travel at speeds which can seriously hurt a pedestrian.
As for the bell and yelling...arghhhhh I've approached people ringing the **bleep** outta my bell, they don't hear it so I have to yell. But I do say thanks as I pass them.

I pay rego on two cars. I and my children all ride...why should we have to pay more money to ride a bike...**bleep** society is losing its grip on reality.....paying to ride a **bleep**ing bike?!!!

If that was to happen then I want jiggers that jog on the road to pay rego too....and why not pedestrians? I have no footpath and many times have to go around them on my street road....oh and the bloody running prams...will stop my rant hahahaha

But really, people really want to start paying money to governments and councils for everything!?? What happened to life? We pay and pay and pay and pay....please can we stop and just live.

Re: Cyclist and 1Meter rule

I'd be happy if they got rid of the stupid rule that allows riders to ride side by side. I can get stuck behind groups of riders for several kilometres on our narrow, windy, hilly roads. There's very few places to overtake a single cyclist let alone two riding next to each other.

Cant imagine how the driver would be in the wrong in the op's example, if they were behind the car when it started indicating left, arent they legally required to give way? Different if they were already beside the car of course.

Re: Cyclist and 1Meter rule

l*t a pedestrian can be hit by a cyclist and the cyclist can just jump back on their bke and get away but a pedestrian isn't going to be running away faster than a bike rider should they cause the bike rider to have a fall.

We need to be able to identify the hit and run idiots and a rego plate is the only way I can think of to do it.
