Cyclist and 1Meter rule

I just saw Current Affair where they showed a car turn left into two cyclist. The car had his left indicator on - looked like he was travelling at very slow speed - the cyclist overtook the car on the car's left and he turned left into them. Was it his fault or the cyclist who overtook on the car's left?

They were talking about making a '0ne meter' law. I cannot see how this will work on many roads. To keep one meter away while overtaking a cyclist or group of cyclist would put you over the centre line in many cases - risking a head on collision??? It would be OK when there is a separate lane but SO MANY roads do not have enough room for it.

Opinions on this rule?? How would it work?  Opinions on the Current Affair accident?

And you also said that you ring your bell and yell at pedestrians to get out of your way - when they have every right to be walking on the foot-path - actually more right than you have to ride on the foot-path.

If you ride a bike on shared path and there is somebody walking in the middle, obviously quite oblivious that you are coming, they can step sidewise at any time.  The only way to make sure that they know you are behind them is to make some sort of noice, especially if some might be listening to music.

Actually, i think that shared path is the worst idea.  It is OK for going for walk with your 5 years old on a bike, but anything else is unsuitable.  As is putting bike path right smack middle through our off the leash dog park.  The path is winding and as there are large bushes we cannot see the fast going comuting riders until last moment.  It is dangerous for the dogs as well as riders.  My older dogs ignore the bikes and come as soon as I call them, but I stopped going there because the puppy looked like she would really like to catch one of them.  So what is the point of off the leash dog park if you cannot let dogs safely off the leash?

Try blowing your horn at a bike rider to warn them and see what gestures you are subject to !!

Shared paths, is it really too much to expect a cyclist to slow down, even if it means dismounting to pass a pedestrian with SAFETY? Just as they demand of car drivers paassing them safely. Share the road, share the responsibility for each others safety

Yes, I have an opinion. No you don't have to agree with it. Yes I do have a right to it.

Re: Cyclist and 1Meter rule

Cars do make enough noise.

The 1m rule is there mainly for the reason that if car goes past cyclist too close the wind they create can knock the cyclist off their bike.  Considering that it is the car that is danger to the cyclist, and not the other way around, it does not matter if cyclist comes closer than 1m to a stationary car.

This is the minimum what bike path should look like, and it would be safer for everyone

All very nice in theory - but who is going to PAY for these cycle tracks everywhere??

Now, the roads, they are paid for from Motor Vehicle Registrations - so, if the cyclist want their own roads then they should pay a Registration Fee AND they should carry Insurance so that when they run down a pedestrian or run into your car {insert your car type here}  and scratch all along the doors and guards which would cost ($5,000) to fix out of YOUR pocket or YOUR Insurance as it is now.

Re: Cyclist and 1Meter rule

Rego: doesn't pay for roads. Taxes pay for roads. Roads are not made for cars, they are made for road users. Bikes have been around for longer than cars. The argument that bikes shouldn't be on the road because "they don't pay rego" is invalid. A bike is a vehicle, by definition, and is allowed to be on the road (and take up a whole lane where necessary).

Re: Cyclist and 1Meter rule

i already pay rego **bleep**...several times over a year.

i bet i pay more rego than you and i cause less road damage because i cycle....not to mention less congestion.

Re: Cyclist and 1Meter rule

I don't give a tinker's cuss how much you pay in rego for cars you don't drive, I just want you to pay rego for the vehicle you are riding and I want it to have a rego plate so that I can write down the number if I need to contact the police.

As for pedestrians stepping sideways for a cyclist, sure thing, BUT I can's step side ways with my left foot so if I have to stick to the middle of the path while waiting 7 or 8 months so far for the shared path to be restored then that is where I will be walking. No way am I going to ruin another set of wheels on a $300 Sholley just for some self important, do gooder, saving the planet, leftist, loony cyclist.

Sorry, I'm on my butterbox because Critical Mass have started up their rides again, obviously lycra is toxic to ones brain cells when it come to the (hypo)Critical Mass.

For those who don't know, Critical Mass is group of psycho cyclists who protest by riding their bikes through Sydney CBD in peak on the last Friday afternoon of the month and if you ever encounter them you will be shown more ways to use your fingers to make rude jestures than any decent person could imagine.
