Kayza, what is a VLCD. I'm thinking it is a very limited calorie drink or diet but not sure. I've never done a diet or had those protein shakes but I did love Sustagen when I was pregnant with my first. I had a craving for it along with sardines.

Joono it's a Very Low Calorie Diet so you were on the right track, it's usually used as a term for those shake or meal replacement type diets. Some of them are as low as 800 calories a day, which is not good if you are needing to lose weight over a long term.
Sustagen is great, especially when you're pregnant or breastfeeding. My daughter has it with her breakfast sometimes before school.

Newstart, I'm confused... are your shakes Meal Replacements? Or do you have a meal with them and they are more of a health shake?
Kayza - I have a shake in the morning as breakfast and that keeps me full until lunch time or after and I don't look for snacks. If I exercise that morning I MAY have a small bowl of cereal to reboost my energy but very rarely.
I only sampled all the diet shakes over 12 months as an experiment to see if they were all they were cracked up to be and tasted any good and they are not.
I gave each one I tried a fair trial.
I started making my own because the packet shakes do NOT fill you up for long, not confident what is in them, variety is small and they taste very watery. you need a snack with these shakes which the diet companies are very willing to sell you as a supplement after your initial purchase when you get a packet free hahaha. If the packet shakes are so good why do you need the snacks (only to make more money).
The shake I make is very filling, high in protein, low in carb and I feel great. Try it and hope it works for you.

Hi newstart
just wondering what brand protein powder you use and would you add just a tablespoon to the shake which I would call a smoothie
thanks

I use Vital Greens protein powder which has approx. 0.1% carb per serve.
I use a good tablespoon in a serve. This available on line so google and have a look.

I see a dietician who has recommend xylitol as a sugar substitute. It comes in a powdered form.
If you normally have 2 teaspoons of sugar in a drink you only need 1 of the xylitol.

so could that replace honey in the recipe above ^^^^^^^^^?

Good question, and I'm unsure. If the honey is just there for the sweetness side of things, then yes.
Xylitol is a natural product apparently, not a man made substance.

I use the honey for a sweetener but also because it is a natural anti oxidant, if you can't or don't like honey use another sweetener if you need one. I do because I have equal in my tea and need a sweetener.
