The revelation of Daniel Andrews' $3.3 billion blowout on his "signature" West Gate Tunnel project is just another blow to the "punch-drunk electors and taxpayers" of Victoria, according to Sky News host Peta Credlin.
"You may remember that when Daniel Andrews was first elected, he tore up contracts signed by the former Napthine Liberal government to build the East West Link," Ms Credlin said.
"It didn't matter that construction was already underway, Andrews killed it off because he had a pre-election deal with the Greens and as a result, taxpayers were forced to pay out a billion dollars in compensation, for contract breach.
"A billion dollars not to build a new, much needed road.
"And in place of the cancelled East-West link, the Andrews government accepted a near-substitute proposal from Transurban, to build the West Gate Tunnel instead.
"It was never the best option, but it's turning out to be just another one of the Andrews government disasters inflicted on long-suffering Victorians.
"Now it's a project that's stalled before it's barely started, with a near $7 billion dollar original cost, now looking like well over $10 billion, and no completion date.
"It's hard to credit, isn't it. Just another blow to the punch-drunk electors and taxpayers of Victoria."
But Victorians think he's the best thing since sliced bread!

If there are early effective life-saving oral drug treatment, we would still have to establish that Dan Andrews
I don't believe in discussing one's experience, qualifications, etc., on a public forum. For one thing, people can make up whatever they like, simply to support their own point of view. For another, even experts have different points of view and different specific fields of expertise. Hence, I'm not going to trail my coat and declaim anything. I will only say that without medical expertise and experience and knowledge of biochemistry or pathology as basic background, informed discussion is unlikely to occur. And this is a public "Community Spirit" board, not a medical or pathology forum...
Back to Daniel Andrews and the Victorian taxpayer. I'm with springyzone in much of what she's said. As to his moral standing, I don't know him well enough. (Some of his actions and words have not been admirable, but that is to judge from a distance and from the outside.) I am certainly fed up with political grandstanding and the cancelling of this or that on the basis of political manoeuvring. Premier Andrews has cost this state much - and let's not even get into the B&R agreement...
4channel, your denial is facetious. You were baiting imastawka, who hasn't even posted here. If I can see it, everyone can see it. It's not a killing offence; some delicate insults in the spirit of robust disagreement should be able to be posted. We're adults and should be able to disagree with each other, after all, as long as it doesn't go beyond a certain point... But it's disingenuous to pretend you were not doing what you were doing. Own it and be proud of it if you're going to post with needles.
Janebabe has said it. The people in the community who refuse to comply with public health directives (and are arguing with the most ridiculous nonsense-fuelled notions and carrying on like tantrum-throwing toddlers) are putting everyone at risk. It's ridiculous.
The modelling (with previous strain, not Delta) shows that even with 80% compliance, the case numbers would be going down and lockdown restrictions could have been eased within a reasonable timeframe. Now that it's Delta, we would need to see between (roughly) 90% and 100% compliance - and we're not. It's not only the deliberate "I'm a sovereign person and the virus isn't real/won't touch me/etc" rule-breakers who are not complying... It's also (and I think this is the real driver of the NSW outbreaks) the people who will simply and casually visit between households thinking "It won't matter if I just pop around for a few minutes", the people who go to work and touch their masks or wear their masks wrongly, who share a ride to save money, who take a smoko and are standing around close to each other... It's the "Oh, it won't matter if I just [insert action]" mindset.
Uh-oh... off the Dan-delivering-blow topic again. Well, I would have liked to see the east-west link implemented. I think our local library is now in a very ugly building that looks like a swimming pool centre. I think there's too much traffic on our roads and that the solution is not "let's make them prefer public transport"... I think that our Arts Centre (all of it - State Theatre, Recital Centre, NGV, Museum, etc., if I can lump them all in together) are excellent. I think that being involved in the arts during this pandemic is soul-bruising at best, and that an outdoor theatre experience is the only way to stage something - and even then, it would have to have the audience socially distanced, masked, sanitised and hopefully vaccinated. I think I'd like to stage Medea in the original Classical Greek, performed in an amphitheatre at dusk, just for the heck of it.
I could write a great Tragedy about how no one came to see it... and stage that play, and then write another great Tragedy about how no one came to see that, and so on until the marble columns shatter and the sun plunges into a pool of tragic waters.

Not going to be taking your bait this time.

The problem is as I see it icyfroth that people still hold on to the belief that Labour is benign compared to the Liberal party which has an atrocious record. Sadly this man sold himself with spiel that appealed to many people. Many are only now realizing that all is not what it seemed to be. I do believe that he is a lot like Tony Blair. Some may say an unknown quantity too.

The real trouble here is not that Victorians think Dan is remarkable, it is that there is no really effective Opposition party. They are just not a robust group, pushing their views and ideas. I would hazard a guess quite a few people would not even know who the Vic Lib leader is.
Just for the record, I didn't vote for Dan a few years back when the East-West link was under discussion. I would have liked to see it go ahead. However, voters did vote his party in and they did it knowing full well what the deal was. Dan had promised his party would not go ahead with it. He was voted in on that promise.
Therefore, he absolutely had to carry through on that promise. It was his main political rallying point. Anyone with half a brain knew it would come at a cost, that had been mentioned in the papers before the election.
Now, I and plenty of others might not have liked the fact it was cancelled and we lost a lot of money, but we can't argue with the fact the majority elected him to do just that. That's how democracy works, there are always some people who won't like the decisions.
And yes, it is a lot like these lockdowns. Without majority compliance, they won't work.
I liked Gladys and her response to a reporter yesterday I think it was, who asked why the government wasn't doing more for poor souls who didn't understand or know about the restrictions. She said in no uncertain terms that some people are lying. That's it in a nutshell.
I was also reading a comment by a top doctor in NSW who, in very carefully phrased terms, basically said what is driving up the spread rate in NSW is non compliance by some of the migrant population.
That there are families who are quite sick and deliberately avoiding testing as they have no intention of isolating and don't want to impose that on their families either. It's about money. A lot of things are, aren't they.
Then they claim they didn't understand if caught. That might have been credible 18 months back but the basic facts about testing and isolation and the meaning of lockdown should be clearly understood by everyone by now.
I can understand economic worries but people who are isolating can claim some payment now so it isn't the same economic hardship it was at the start.

So, how things shaping up in 'gold standard' Gladystan? I see miss-unlucky-in-love's ex is embroiled in yet another corruption scandal. Of course she didn't know about it. Just ask the right wing media. Meanwhile, the virus spreads, the bodies pile up and the populace is starting to fray at the edges. Not her fault that it got out of control because she decided her corporate pals (and party donors) were more important than human lives. I've watched her numerous press conferences and it's you, the general public who are to blame.
Rotten to the core she is, as is her deputy. The pair of them should be swinging.

Politicians and their relationship with business people, corporations and certain groups with agendas. Will it ever change? What I can't work out is why the people keep falling for the same old garbage spiel every time.
I still support Labor to a degree and over any other political party in Aust. I'm hoping that it will one-day get back to what it was and hold true the values. But those two you mentioned, as well as Tony Blair Andrews are just opposite sides of the same coin.

The Vic. Opppstion leader sounds like Ron de Santis. Luckily he's not in power or the cemeteries in Melbourne would resemble those in Rio.

Attempted suicide rates among Victorian teenagers soar by 184 per cent in past six months, Kids Helpline reveals
A disturbing pattern of behaviour is emerging in Victorian teens amid the pandemic, sparking concerns of a mental health crisis.
By Anthony Piovesan
Attempted suicide rates among Victorian teenagers have skyrocketed by 184 per cent in the past six months.
"Stressed families meant we heard from young people at risk of abuse from family members,โ Leo Hede, Kids Helpline Project Manager, said.
โKids Helpline counsellors understood that many households had become particularly tense during lockdown.
โWhere schools and other community connections may have previously played a role supporting young people at risk of abuse, the extended lockdowns and home schooling may have led to an increase in young people seeking support from us.โ
Just two months ago, the Kids Helpline also revealed childrenโs counsellors were calling police and ambulances 53 times a week to help suicidal or abused children as young as five.

Teen suicides โcould be the tip of tollโ
An alarming increase in deaths by suicide among young women this year could be the first sign of a a tragic but expected result of the pandemic, a former national mental health commission chair says.
