Diary of our stinking Govt.

As it's more than 100 days now, it has been suggested that a new thread was needed.  The current govt has been breaking promises and telling lies at a rate so fast it's hard to keep up.Woman Happy

This below is worrying, "independent" pffft, as if your own doctor is somehow what? biased, it's ridiculous. So far there is talk of only including people under a certain age 30-35, for now. Remember that if your injured in a car, injured at work or get ill, you too might need to go on the DSP. They have done a similar think in the UK with devastating consequences.

and this is the 2nd time recently where the Govt has referred to work as welfare???? So when you go to work tomorrow (or tuesday), just remember that's welfare.

Independent doctors could be called in to reassess disability pensioners, Federal Government says

The Federal Government is considering using independent doctors to examine disability pensioners and assess whether they should continue to receive payments.

Currently family doctors provide reports supporting claims for the Disability Support Pension (DSP).

But Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews is considering a measure that would see independent doctors reassess eligibility.

"We are concerned that where people can work, the best form of welfare is work," Mr Andrews said at a press conference.

Economists say Government should scrap negative gearing tax break to potentially save $5 billion

November 2014

Senior economists have suggested the Federal Government should scrap negative gearing, a move that would save $5 billion in the first year.

Negative gearing allows property investors to claim expenses for a rental property including interest payments, repairs and council rates to reduce tax paid on any other income.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch chief economist Saul Eslake said the original idea behind the tax break has not worked.

"In my view it's serving to push up the price of the existing dwelling stock to the disadvantage particularly of younger people, who would like to become home owners, and previous generations who would have been home owners by now already," Mr Eslake said.

He said that the original idea of negative gearing on residential property was to promote the construction of new houses and increase the stock of rental properties, but that has not worked.

"We've reached a point now where investors account for more than half the borrowing that's undertaken for the purchase of established properties, and nearly half of all the borrowing for purchases of properties of any type," he said.

He said using negative gearing was hurting the long-term supply of housing.

Re: Diary of our stinking Govt.

I think it's the overseas investors inflating the market. The trouble with getting rid of negative gearing is that there wouldn't be enough rental properties around which would cause rents to skyrocket even higher, it's a bit of a catch 22 that one

Yes, you think Abbott would have learnt his lesson after he called that international press conference to say he was sure the Australian Airforce would find where MH370 went down.

Throughout his life, Abbott has needed the Church and its teachings, sometimes to a desperate degree, because he realises that without it he would be morally and even psychologically lost. He knows he has personal demons to quell. Between his belfry-bat ears is a coil of such saturnine weirdness that no one, not even his closest friends, would want to unravel it. This makes him do things he comes to regret.

His wife, Margie, knows this. In 2005 when she heard that John Brogden had resigned as NSW Opposition leader, after being found in his office with self-inflicted wounds, she told her husband, โ€œWhatever happens, donโ€™t you say anything about it.โ€ The next day, Abbott, then health minister, joked about Brogdenโ€™s actions in relation to a change to a Liberal policy: โ€œIf we did that, we would be as dead as the former Liberal leaderโ€™s political prospects.โ€ Abbottโ€™s response to the subsequent outcry was, โ€œLook, Iโ€™ve never claimed to be the worldโ€™s most sensitive person.โ€

And he is right. When dying asbestos campaigner Bernie Banton, suffering from terminal cancer, tried to deliver a petition to Abbottโ€™s electorate office in Manly, Abbott, who wasnโ€™t there, called Banton โ€œgutlessโ€, the event โ€œa stuntโ€ and remarked that โ€œjust because a person is sick doesnโ€™t mean that he is necessarily pure at heart in all thingsโ€.

wow!  did you write that?

Re: Diary of our stinking Govt.

to aps......I did not say that abolishing neg gearing would bring down house prices.....I suggested getting rid of o/seas (FIRB is a crooked set-up imo) buyers......for residential real estate at least.

to am3......yes Joe and wife would have a lot of 'contacts' with doosh bank, being that wife worked there a while back.....and Joe being Treasurer would find it easy to get a bank loan........Josh Frydenberg, latest recruit to the Treasurer worked for Deutshce Bank too.....a handy lil enclave of contacts for the front benchers

......it is who you know not what you know.....

I am not against people making their riches but find this lot a mite hypocritical, slashing and burning since they've been in- telling us that we have to tighten our belts, do without etc

And would it save much.

Rents would go up, owners would claim All costs of the house and off set this against tax paid from other income.
I think you will find the govt has done the numbers and worked out it might cost more to remove negative gearing.

Re: Diary of our stinking Govt.

Yes paints, i agree, though the Lab party brought in some rules about foreign investment, There are easy ways around them, people who live here are buying properties for those overseas investors now, often helped and advised by RE agents

Aps our investment property is positive geared. I hope that gives you a clue about the welfare you keep telling me I'm on lol

The libs have done nothing about foreign investment, they encourage it
