As it's more than 100 days now, it has been suggested that a new thread was needed. The current govt has been breaking promises and telling lies at a rate so fast it's hard to keep up.
This below is worrying, "independent" pffft, as if your own doctor is somehow what? biased, it's ridiculous. So far there is talk of only including people under a certain age 30-35, for now. Remember that if your injured in a car, injured at work or get ill, you too might need to go on the DSP. They have done a similar think in the UK with devastating consequences.
and this is the 2nd time recently where the Govt has referred to work as welfare???? So when you go to work tomorrow (or tuesday), just remember that's welfare.

Independent doctors could be called in to reassess disability pensioners, Federal Government says
The Federal Government is considering using independent doctors to examine disability pensioners and assess whether they should continue to receive payments.
Currently family doctors provide reports supporting claims for the Disability Support Pension (DSP).
But Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews is considering a measure that would see independent doctors reassess eligibility.
"We are concerned that where people can work, the best form of welfare is work," Mr Andrews said at a press conference.

Tony Abbott branded 'Captain Chaos' over medical school plan
Prime Minister Tony Abbott has been accused of making a "calamitous captain's call" for deciding to throw his support behind a plan to set up another Australian medical school.
Medical groups are furious the federal government will help fund the new Curtin University medical school in Perth, saying it is part of a cynical bid to shore up softening Coalition support in Western Australia.
Mr Abbott flew to Perth on Saturday ahead of an announcement about federal support early on Sunday. Fairfax Media understands Mr Abbott will pledge millions of dollars for the project
uh-oh - the captain is at it again

Joe Blasts Welfare Rich
Sorry too hard to cut and paste the whole article! But I think the figures could be wrong there, they are assuming a single parent gets full welfare after earning 30,000? I thought it was cut once you earn a certain level?. Not sure if this comment from the site is right but this reader says the following:
'Parenting Payment (their youngest has to be under 6) can only earn $184.60, plus $24.60 for each additional child per fortnight to get the maximum payment, anything over that income reduces the PPS payment by 40 cents in the dollar. AND for single parents on NEWSTART (once the youngest turns 6) they can only earn $100 per fortnight, for earnings between $100 - $250 their payment is reduced by 50 cents for each dollar over $100; for income over $250 per fortnight their payment is reduced by $75 plus 60 cents for each dollar over $250.'
I must be missing something with his figures? or is it an exaggeration to create a class war then give the government more opportunity to crack down on welfare?

hi Bella, last year the enemy was (apparently) anyone on welfare, jobless and disabled. This year it's mothers who are the enemy.
someone on twitter posted this which I thoroughly agree with when I think about it
Abbott & LNP: Blame women, blame Labor, blame Senate, blame ABC, blame Muslims or refugees blame welfare recipients, blame anyone but who you should blame. yourselves

I don't believe anything in the article the comment by "Ben" underneath sums it up

"Tony Abbott branded 'Captain Chaos' over medical school plan" PLUS "uh-oh - the captain is at it again"
Well it is a start where additional comments to the plethora of C&Ps are concerned, albeit inconsequential to the topic.
It would appear to be a logical step for WA to build/open this medical training establishment, because currently their 2 medical schools are only post graduate establishments, whereas the proposed Curtin school will be for graduate.training.
I had to chuckle at this excerpt from the WA AMA executive:
But Paul Boyatzis, executive director of the WA branch of the Australian Medical Association, questioned the report’s conclusions in a quote included in the report.
“While WA might lag behind other states in respect to medical workforce it doesn’t mean we have a shortage, it just means other states have more doctors,”
Chuckle.

and even more logical as WA has an LNP state govt

BA: "I must be missing something with his figures? or is it an exaggeration to create a class war then give the government more opportunity to crack down on welfare?"
Missing something I think.
Just a couple of hours ago Hockey said on ABC "Insiders", when asked about the figures, that they were NOT his but produced by a media organisation.
BA you write: " Sorry too hard to cut and paste the whole article! But I think the figures could be wrong there, they are assuming a single parent gets full welfare after earning 30,000? "
BA it is important to consider what is actually printed and what is fact, because the comment is "devious" but also correct, being all in the grammar / interpretation! because "pensioners" could be a generic term for individual (claiming) pensioner(s) or a couple e.g:
"The figures also reveal that pensioners can have assets worth $400,000, not including the family home, and still claim $30,000 a year in welfare."
That is correct for COUPLES who are also home-owners under the old, AND new asset tests.. Actually in the new asset test range there will be an small increase in this example to $33,500
Note: I am referring to the Aged Pension calculations whereas the Telegraph article refers to "welfare".

Repeat.
Alan Kohler - Budget small business
"The small business tax cut is virtually pointless, a $1 billion a year handout to family-owned shops and sole tradies that will achieve nothing. That’s because any investment or new employment that a small business is likely to make in response to the tax cut will be designed to get its turnover above $2 million a year, otherwise what’s the point, at which level the tax rate goes back to 30 per cent.
Likewise the accelerated depreciation: it applies to assets of less than $20,000, and that’s not even going to buy a locally made car. Maybe an espresso coffee machine for a cafe, but only a cheap one."
Another economist pushing his own barrow, sharing his pink outlook.
Serious though, he is right on the mark.

Former Speaker Peter Slipper has been cleared of the dishonesty charges that have haunted him for three years.
The ACT Supreme Court on Thursday (26 February 2015) struck out his conviction for using taxpayer-funded taxi vouchers for visits to Canberra region wineries on three occasions in 2010.
The decision means he will no longer have to undertake 300 hours of community service or repay $954 to the Commonwealth imposed on him by an ACT Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker in September.

It is a pity that myopic political views can be so egregiously biased as to override what I would consider to be expected of all, a bi-partisan acceptance of the need for further and better medical infrastructure/training.
Old article, excerpt
Two universities have applied for a new medical school — Charles Sturt University in NSW and Curtin University in WA........
Who is lobbying for Curtin University? Some well-connected people. Jim McGinty is chair of Health Workforce Australia, and former Minister of Health in the previous ALP government Health Workforce
National Workforce Comparisons (Health

• WA has the lowest number of medical

• WA has a greater reliance on overseas trained
doctors compared to every state.
• WA produces the lowest per capita level of

D9275, People can become sick, regardless of their political allegiences.
Remember that this is treasurer Hockey selling his budget. Careful how much credibility you pay to the "facts".
This Federal Liberal government have a history of demonstrating that it has a very middle & upper class view of society - comments like poor people won't be as affected by increases in fuel tax and policy proposals such a six month wait before job seekers under 30 can access the dole are two such examples.
These "facts" are just another example of the Federal Government beating up on and misunderstanding a part of Australia that they don't identify with.
