Diary of our stinking Govt.

As it's more than 100 days now, it has been suggested that a new thread was needed.  The current govt has been breaking promises and telling lies at a rate so fast it's hard to keep up.Woman Happy

This below is worrying, "independent" pffft, as if your own doctor is somehow what? biased, it's ridiculous. So far there is talk of only including people under a certain age 30-35, for now. Remember that if your injured in a car, injured at work or get ill, you too might need to go on the DSP. They have done a similar think in the UK with devastating consequences.

and this is the 2nd time recently where the Govt has referred to work as welfare???? So when you go to work tomorrow (or tuesday), just remember that's welfare.

Independent doctors could be called in to reassess disability pensioners, Federal Government says

The Federal Government is considering using independent doctors to examine disability pensioners and assess whether they should continue to receive payments.

Currently family doctors provide reports supporting claims for the Disability Support Pension (DSP).

But Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews is considering a measure that would see independent doctors reassess eligibility.

"We are concerned that where people can work, the best form of welfare is work," Mr Andrews said at a press conference.

" I think that where leaks are concerned the prize for cabinet colander must go to the Circus,  and especially Rudd's treatment of Poor Me.  (sorry about the forbidden history period)

I do wonder if  Laurie Oakes always  kept a towel handy during those heady knife throwing days !"

Sorry if you misunderstood the post, it was about today's cabinet leak on cabinet's discussion of last weeks leak.

No I did not misunderstand you.  Just indicating that "both" gangs do it.  In fact Poor Me had  a good grounding coming from a country where the leek is  the national emblem.

http://www.theage.com.au/federal-politics/political-opinion/cabinet-leaks-reveal-tony-abbott-is-less...

Since nearly losing it all in February, Tony Abbott's leadership has morphed to be both stronger and weaker โ€“ or more precisely, safer than it was, yet less commanding.

If there is a further lesson from the rebuke of the Prime Minister, it is this: Abbott's ambit as a leader has been trimmed since his February collapse.

How?

Last week's cabinet leak revealing the Prime Minister had been blocked from giving the Immigration Minister the power to strip Australian citizenship from sole nationals suspected of terrorist sympathies, prompted speculation that his leadership will again come under challenge

a little more on the current govt's leaks

Re: Diary of our stinking Govt.

Bella, here's an article with some figures you might find interesting

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-06-02/janda-why-housing-affordability-isnt-being-fixed/6514766

though I don't think interest rates will move up for awhile, this is the part that bothers me

If the economy continues to worsen, even though rates will stay low, more people will lose their jobs, housing defaults will rise and prices will fall as forced sellers come on the market.

If the economy improves, rates will rise and many investors and owner-occupiers will be forced to sell when they can't afford the higher repayments.

Re: Diary of our stinking Govt.

I remember my parents having to sell up when interest rates were double figures, they just couldn't service the loan but sadly found it a nightmare to rent at the time.  I don't think anyone wins in that situation.  Do you think that is where Australia is headed? for another big recession?

Re: Diary of our stinking Govt.

how bizzare is this?

Labor moves to bring gov small business package to a vote and gov defeats it - It's own legislation!

Govt votes against fast tracking its own small biz budget measures (77 no votes, 47 yes votes)

Re: Diary of our stinking Govt.

Bizzare, really? where politics are concerned?, and  the ever present desire to attract media coverage for the bleaters, like our microcosm?

Now for some simple facts:

"Labor moves to bring gov small business package to a vote and gov defeats it - It's own legislation!"

Wrong:  The government used its numbers to defeat a Labor motion that the legislation be put to a vote. There is an important difference.

Why the hurry?, other than posturing,  because the Senate will not be sitting for a couple of weeks,  (that is a rhetorical question)

Finally:  The government decides the progress of Bills, not the opposition.

However, it comes as a shock to observe Harvey Shorten appear, and  generate some "noise".   This week it has been  the marriage equality act (failed) and the fast-tracking  of a proposed bill (failed).  One must wonder why he proceeded with measures that plainly were doomed.  (rhetorical again)

Perhaps Shorten should wait until the forthcoming ALP National Conference in July tells him what to think.

Re: Diary of our stinking Govt.

Yeah the housing affordability is a real issue but I think its also hard.  For example if we bring down the prices of houses a lot of people who are paying off houses would be significantly worse off with the value of their house maybe even halving or being in a situation where the loan is more than what the house is worth.

I am not sure of the answer, people need access to housing but how do we introduce policy to encourage that and do we need to do what some countries do and introduce those lifetime leases.  Maybe we need a whole new take on it.  Maybe even a cap on price rises... loans that people can access...  I can't at the moment see a solution where everyone wins and yet its a big issue.

Labor ambush sees government vote down its own small business budget measure

Labor has ambushed the Coalition in Parliament, which has resulted in the government voting against its own key budget measures that it has been calling on the opposition to pass as a matter of urgency.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten caught the Coalition by surprise by calling on a vote at the end of a speech on Wednesday morning, given the opposition supports the plan to let small businesses write off new assets worth up to $20,000 in one financial year instead of four.

The government voted against the bill, despite devoting a portion of question time this week urging Labor to pass the measure.

"Let us pass this bill straight away," Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Monday.

"Let's get it through this place in a hurry," Small Business Minister Bruce Billson said last week.

On Wednesday, Mr Shorten obliged.

"We are not going to delay this legislation for one minute longer," he told the House of Representatives and then put forward a parliamentary procedure that if approved would allow an immediate vote.

The government opposed Labor's motion so it failed by 47 to 77 votes.

so why ARE the Libs stalling  passing this Bill, it's been 22 days since they announced it  and Labour has already committed to passing it

is it to get more political milage out of and to accuse Labour of stalling it??

or do they not all agree with the Bill?
